Like Bill has mentioned before I don’t know how you hold the draft in June when there are conditional picks in play. That’s the one I can’t make sense of regarding the draft.

If Wikipedia is correct then there are 6 unresolved conditional 1st rounders in play for this draft, let alone all the picks in following rounds...

It doesn't have to make hockey sense or common sense for that matter. Gary Bettman is in charge of one thing, maximizing the business side of the NHL. Sort of like Dave Scott. Hockey is simply a means to an end for them. That end being more dollars.

These types will do whatever they see fit to maximize return on their investments.

I really get that it would track higher attention and bring in more revenue than typically, but that will likely happen no matter when we hold it given how starved the sports world is.

Best plan of action would be to post-pone it until early September due to that being roughly the latest possible re-start date. If the season is canceled we’ll still have a date set or if we resume we can push it back again.

Very true. That said he’s going to have a number of pissed off GM’s on his hands with whatever they decide about those picks. I’m Just glad the Flyers aren’t tied up in that mess with conditional 1st’s.

Yeah I'm hoping the GM's give them hell about it.

So Detroit gets a clear cut reward for sucking and a team sitting in 9th could end up picking 10th or 11th but then could end up squeaking into the playoffs.

(frank) off Gary! Holding a sham draft online in early June isn’t going to grow the game you friggin nimrod!

I know it’s a business. But at this point just stop. Season is over. Focus on the draft and free agency. Figure out how conditional picks work and move on.

Ageed.

Maybe they could get 30-40 willing players to get together to put on a little televised 3 on 3 tournament. Other than that the draft isn’t going to bring in new fans.

The NHL would be derelict if they brought players in for something like that in the current environment.

There would have to be extensive planning and players/staff would have to be ok with quarantine periods leading up to it happening. Not like I’m saying Gary should call some guys up for a pick up game on a whim.

That’s far closer to being a reality than anyone who thinks the season is coming back anytime soon imo.

Really it's not far closer to being a reality because they wouldn't plan something like that, which is an exhibition during an ongoing pandemic. Nobody would take the risk to put something like that on. It's far less of a possibility than continuing with the season for that reason.

Can someone explain how a 24 team playoff would work? Wouldn't it have to be 8 or 16 teams? Has to be a power of 2, right?

Thanks for the PM. I'm just looking at it as an even amount of teams. I personally don't agree with expanding the amount of teams in the playoffs, but 24 teams could work. 8 more teams added adds up to 4 more playoff series.

But how do they get it down to a champ?

24/2=12
12/2=6
6/2=3
3%2=1.5

That's why you need a power of 2 (like 16).

I haven't done any breakdowns to see if it can actually work (since there are some variables involved), but if their keen on this number of teams, it means there will have to be some sort of elimination round(s) for the lowest seeded teams while the highest seeded teams get to wait it out.
