It would be terrible if the Islanders don't advance to the playoffs, but anything can happen in a 5 game series. The shot at 1st pick is intriguing, but could they afford him?

Huh? He would be getting an entry level contract. Why wouldn't they be able to afford him?

This ^^^^. Of course he'd be on an entry-level contract and easily affordable.

Seriously?

Jack Hughes signed a 3 year / $11,325,000 'entry level' contract.

Alexis Lafreniere is bigger, stronger and perhaps the best thing since Crosby. He'll command $4-5 mil. The Islanders will have near zero cap space, especially if they sign Sorokin, who isn't going to be cheap either.

You sure about that? Hughes is earning $925,000 per season.

$2.8 mil annual performance bonuses. Isn't that counted against cap?

Edit: I guess not. Nico signed the same contract in 2017 and made much more than his current 925K cap hit. My mistake.

I found this on performance bonus'. I hope it's correct.

They do count against cap, but there is wiggle room.

Bonus Rollover

Performance bonuses count against the salary cap as soon as they are earned. If there’s cap space to absorb them, great, we never need speak of it again...

If the end of year cap space isn’t enough to absorb the bonuses actually earned, then the excess is rolled into the next year and counts against the salary cap, eating into the space just like retained salary or an overpaid player in the press box does.

This season the Leafs have $2,550,000 from last season counting against the cap like a phantom character guy doing some eight minute games on the fourth line.

Interesting article, thanks. From that article........
"In the normal course of things, you ignore the performance bonuses on a contract. They aren’t added into the cap hit that is calculated from the 23-man roster, and generally we forget they exist....."

Right. They don't count against cap until they are earned, which means they are applied to the next years cap. Now I know where the mystery cap hits are coming from. The bonus cushion actually lets a team 'spend' $6 million over cap one year and apply it to the next when expiring contracts will keep them under.

Some confusing stuff going on around here.

I think Lafteniere is elite, but since Crosby we've had McDavid and Matthews, both of whom are better than Alexis.

The maximum cap hit on an ELC is $925k. The rest of the value of that contract is performance and signing bonuses, which don't count towards the cap on an ELC. Jack Hughes cap hit is $925k not $3.775M and LaFreniere's cap hit will also be $925k for the first three seasons which is the same as every other top pick, more or less.

Also: the best thing since Crosby is Connor McDavid.

The reason a lot of those contracts in Canada are heavily "bonus" laden is they have a different tax rate on the Bonus portion of the Contract. It's a Significant diference on how much they keep. That is also why a lot of these contract negotiations are funny b/c while they are offereing someone like Marner a certain amount a year that he turns down.. .once it is structured as mostly Bonus money they sign.

JT is often reported to have "taken less $" to play for Leafs. He actually got more on the signing bonus alone then what the Isles would have paid him for the duration of his contract including the 8th year.. after taxes. then you can add after that he is still making 1 mill a year on his Salary.

ever since learning that I often wait till a big UFA or RFA signs and look for the "bonus money" especially in Canada..etc. The bonuses are also Lockout proof if given in a lump sum too.

Heard today that it's looking like Vegas and Toronto for the NHL hub cities -- and teams will stay in their region, which means #Isles would go to Toronto.

Is this how Toronto stays under the cap while paying almost $20 million over cap?

Yes, the max for an ELC, including all bonus, is 3.77 mil.

What is your source? What I'm reading says performance bonuses are limited to ELC's and 35+, and those payments count against cap when they are paid (effectively pushing the cap hit to the following year). The bonus cushion ($6 mil) can be used to push the cap hit off to the following year, but it eventually counts against cap.
