After burning the year 1 ELC, that would make him an RFA, correct? Aren't there parameters for what RFA's can potentially sign for? Would a team Offer Sheet him? Lou's gonna earn his money this off season for sure. |

Man I would love to have you as my GM with the numbers you have mentioned lately for the players the Islanders have to sign |

Correct, he'd be an RFA, but I believe he'd be exempt from any offer sheet (and I think it's extremely unlikely we'd see that anyways even if he wasn't exempt). |

I think it makes a lot more sense to give money and term to good, young players, rather than the likes of Leo Komarov, Matt Martin, Patrick Marleau and Nikita Zaitsev, or any other players who you have to trade with assets in a few years for teams to take them from you. |

So do I but the fact that most are RFA's gives the team a bit of the upper hand. Also there was a world wide pandemic that has put a hold on any cap increase for this year and next because of it. This will play into the value of the new contracts given out this year and next.
Let me add the Cap was supposed to go up this year so it's a big disadvantage to every GM in the NHL with the Cap freeze. That said, every player looking for a new contract whether they are RFA's or FA's are going to feel the effects of it. |

Better just trade him, Ladd and Komarov for Georgiev and Panarin. - Tonybere

Sure would be nice to have Pageaus $5 mil available.
I doubt Lou signs him this year. As a defected draft pick, time is on the Islanders side.
It would be a shame if the Islanders have to package and trade his rights to unload salary, but it could happen.

Are you talking about the $18 - $20 mil for Barzal, Toews and Pulock Ben estimated? If so, I agree. I think Lou gets it done for $16 - $17 mil, which is all he'll have to work with after letting all the other FA's walk. |

I’ve little to no issue with Pageau’s contract. He’s an extremely versatile player that’ll contribute a great deal to any future Islander success.
Komarov, Hickey and Ladd on the other hand... |

And Sorokin, guy hasn’t played an NHL game and hasn’t really acclimated his skills to the NHL ice surface and we’re giving him 5 mil per ? |

Is that what Ben estimated? No way. He will probably get the max on a 1 year ELC and have to earn his next contract.

I mean, as mentioned, that exact scenario happened with a different KHL star in Gusev last year. Different position but it's not like the Islanders are dealing from a position of strength here and while I wouldn't be putting any money on him getting $4-5M, I don't see any reason that it would be different. |

The point is that he'd burn that ELC this year and would be signing a new contract before next season. Sure, from New York's perspective getting him for cheap is great. But from Sorokin's perspective, why would he take a cheap deal? |

Ben what is he making in the KHL do you know? If so please tell me. I have heard it’s 1.5 mil per year on the last contract.
So your gonna pay a guy who hasn’t played an NHL game 5 million? No way, sorry. Kids talented for sure but your not gonna break the bank to bribe him here. |
