If he can play the right side, trade him for Andersen.

The guy has been playing with Travis Hamonic for most of his flames career for god's sake, cut him some slack. When he had Ras as his partner post-covid they were our best pairing, by far. |

The expectation is that Valimaki is already a better LD than Hanifin. Very little evidence, but that is the expectation. If it's true, then you don't need Hanifin.
I would not be looking to trade Hanifin right away, unless the Flames sign Pietrangelo, at which point Hanifin's cap is a liability.
Like you, I saw a much better pairing with Ras and Hanifin. But, is that because Ras makes everyone look better? I am inclined to think so, but you still need a 3/4 guy to play with Ras. Neither Kylington nor Mackey are there. Gio will decline to be one.
From a development persoective, it makes sense to start playing Valimaki more than 13 minutes a night. He needs to be ready when Gio's decline is more evident. |

And when Gio retires after next year, you're left with whom exactly on the left side if you trade Hanifin? Only an unproven Valimaki. Far from a recipe for success. Hanifin is actually the perfect stop gap to operate a smooth transition from Gio to Valimaki without completely depleting the D. He still has 4 years on his contract. It's not like we're in any rush to trade him.
And Valimaki has played 24 games in the NHL, all of them 2 years ago. Before expecting him to be already better than Hanifin, maybe we should let him prove himself in a training camp at least.
Now, if we trade for OEL, of course, it's a different story. |

Now weigh those 10 games versus the previous 394.
During that 10 game stretch he averaged 18:50 per night, his lowest mark since landing in Calgary, and was credited with 14 giveaways vs only 1 takeaway.
Smooth skating defenseman who looks about the same today as he did when he was 19.
It's disappointing because he has all the tools to be better than he is, he just never seems to get there and now he's gonna be 24 soon |

I would do that trade in a heartbeat - but Winnipeg wouldn't.

For comparison:
Noah Hanifin Born 1997 AGE 23
2019-20 season TOI/GP 21:10
Remaining cap commitment 4 years x 4.95mil
Jonas Brodin Born 1993 AGE 27
2019/20 season TOI/GP 21:33
Remaining cap commitment 1 year x 4.16mil, 6 years x 6mil (FULL NMC)
Hanifin's value does not look too bad when comparing these players!

He played far better and had way better chemistry with Rass, don’t sell on him yet. |

Except that every GM in the league would take Brodin and his contact over Hanifin and his.
Hanifin's contact is fine, but most people thought Treliving hit a home run with the contract. It turns out it was more like a hit by pitch.

I agree & fck sakes he's 23 & has played lots of games, some guys the hockey IQ doesnt turn on until 24-25. Gio took longer. Brodie took a little longer. Shouldnt undersell a young player, he's got the tools, just needs to work on the tool box.

Not going to disagree with that.
Hanifin might not bring back the #5 overall pick but he is far from the scrap heap and will get the Flames a significant asset if he is traded. |

Trade him straight up for Ghost. It will save the Flames almost 1/2 mil a year on the cap and the contract expires 1year sooner. |

You mean Ghost that was benched for the playoffs recently? Also a LHS & we need RHS? Heck why dont you sweeten it with JVR while your at it. LOL

Obviously Treliving has a lot of work to do to shore up our defence as we have several UFA defenceman walking...and to be honest, I actually think it’s good timing as we can hopefully take advantage of some lower then normal contracts because of the pandemic...The only way Tre is moving Hanifin is if it makes us better, being that he could be a solid key contributor to landing a big fish of any position...Forward, defence or Goalie. But if he’s gonna be moved I have a gut feeling it will be for a solid top 6 forward like Ehlers...🤞🏻😉 |

I mean, is there that big of a difference between the two that saving some cap space hurts us? Ghost has a pretty high offensive upside - terrible defensively, but it's not like Hanifin's been great in his own end either... Ghost would at least quarterback the powerplay here, an area the Flames need a little help in with a declining Gio |
