I know we give Staal crap, but he was a true warrior and a good ranger. Sucks it ended so bad for him.
But this has to lead to something. No way they trade a 2nd instead of buying him out unless another move is coming |

I really dont see them buying out hank now. It would eat up the cash they just saved by trading Staal. And for what? 1 year of SOME relief?
I think this makes Tony D 5x5 take it or leave it. The cap isn't going up so that flexibility is important too. I'd resign Strome, let Fast walk and let Miller or another new D man get the chance. Let em grow and let em play. They are going to need 2 or 3m in cap space all the time because of Kakko and eventually Laffy. Can't count on the cap going up in the next 2-3 years. Good trade for us.

One goalie has to go, they already said they won’t go into next season with all 3 |

Good luck to him. I like him as a ranger and if it wasn’t for his two big injuries he may of gone way different for him. Class guy that his teammates seem to love. I don’t have a clue what the rangers have up their sleeve now but it’s getting interesting. If they don’t do anything with hank and smith this year they gain near 20 million in cap space next year with Hank aNd smith gone along with buy out money down to 2mil + lots of cap space for 21-22 |

This retool is looking very promising for the Rangers. Going to be a quick turnaround .
Best of luck moving forward . |

If they continue to improve, the 2021 2nd rounder should be a late one. Too bad Oleksiak isn't available. He's steadily improved, and he's a big, physical, left-handed dmam with some offensive ability and a reasonable contract. Wonder why the compensation from the Wings isn't being identified yet. |

Pretty good deal for the Rangers if you use last years Marleau trade as a comp! |

You got 5.7m in cap space. That’s the return. |

Bad comp. That trade required a buyout. If Detroit had to buyout Staal you would have given up 22OA. |

I dig Staal. He played some great years for us with Girardi. I grabbed his jersey in one of those years. Obviously after some injuries it was never the same but the guy played a lot of games for us and solidified our D at times.
Nice write up Jan.
Hope everyone is well. |

Of course, so why not conclude the.deal with whatever late pick or lowly prospect they're going to include. |

I’ll never forget the days of Staal shutting down Ovi on a regular basis. This move had to happen but he had a great career here and I appreciate what he did for this team before his injuries. I agree with Jan in that he seemed to be a scapegoat this year which wasn’t exactly warranted, but he had to go. |

He was more than capable early in his career. The problem over the past several years was that his decision-making was even slower than his skating, and a defender was always getting a stick in the way of his shot. |

"Future considerations." Teams can't trade for cap space, that's just a benefit of the actual trade of players or picks. |

Heartbreaking to see the end of Staal as a Ranger, but we are looking towards the future and something had to be done.
I was kind of hoping he'd stick around the year and help the kids out but it is what it is. |

In the future Yzerman will consider trading with the rangers again. |
