Ek had posted recently that up to 4 teams may be looking at closing their doors without some sort of State/Provincial/Federal intervention.
is there a source on this besides EK... |

His sources, for sure. If you want to “dig” look closely at attendance/finances etc. The bottom teams are Ottawa, NYI, Florida, AZ, New Jersey, Winnipeg for attendance. AZ has a very wealthy new owner, so cut them out. The Isles, this one is hard to guess. The team is playing well but the debacle in Brooklyn really hurt their numbers. The new arena should help, but it’s a lot of money going out the door. Florida is one to keep an eye on. The ups and downs (and covered upper deck) over the years have not helped them be in a strong financial position. Ottawa, I don’t know if it’s location or ownership, but they just can’t draw what they need to. Winnipeg, hard to gauge. Passionate fans but tough finances. Anaheim isn’t much better in attendance for last year. I think in this group you’re going to see the clubs that are scrambling to figure things out. |

Here’s the link for those numbers. http://www.espn.com/nhl/attendance Attendance percentage varies greatly (AZ showing 90% with 14,605) but revenues will coincide to numbers and not percentage full. |

Donato doesn't move the needle much for me. But we could do worse. He's 24. He's likely not going to be much better than he is right now. It depends on the price really. Give Minny Erne, Bowey or Perlini. |

Donato had a spurt when he 1st came to MN, I don't think much since then but is not a negative player. I think if you have to give up something for him 1 to 1, it shouldn't be much. There are deals to be made for bad contracts plus assets before the Wings pursue other players. Stevie then could turn draft capital into NHL young players with upside or just bank the picks and use them himself. I am hoping he gets a couple more picks in THIS draft because of all the talent in the 1st couple rounds.

That’s where I’m at. Give him a shot, see if it pans out. 1.9 mil for one year, as long as the acquisition isn’t “pricey”. |

Deals pre draft could be fast and furious (or during the draft). Teams are finishing assessments and making lists |

I'm getting old. I remember his Dad, Ted Donato when he played for the Bruins. |

The guy i would want from the Wild is Kaprizov even though he isn't a center and i doubt they would trade him. |

Only interested if there’s literally no cost to acquire him. Otherwise I want those potential minutes being force fed to Smith and Svechnikov to see if we should keep them around. |

It’s a fair point. Smith has the ability to be a grinder. Svech just has to have a healthy season. No idea what he is going to be |

This feels like the old DVD bin at Walmart. Everything 5 bucks, but good like finding something you want |

Great words for the owners they have been loyal to Detroit for years. When they hire someone in high a position they honor the opinions of that person. Stevie will get all the support he needs to turn the Wings into winner.
As far as where we are going, i don’t enjoy seeing a lot of the young future players having to leave the country for ice time. Donato is priced right but sometimes the lowest price isn’t the right way to go. |

It’s been tough, but I’m extremely grateful the players have that option. There are college kids who are just going to lose this year playing. The European leagues have been very accommodating. In North America, it’s still “non contact” ice time, 6 feet apart etc. some of these kids really need the development |

On the owners, they are extraordinary. So much of that part of Detroit only exists because the Ilitch family kept investing. I’m not sure what would be left without them and I love their story. Mr I (rest his soul) worked in his father in law’s bar after his pitching career ended due to injury. That’s where he started “little Caesars”. Unreal |

So complete change of topic here:
I was poking around to do some early guesswork on who the Red Wings might protect / expose in the expansion draft, and hit a snag with Filip Zadina.
Every published source I found (including Capfriendly’s expansion draft calculator) claims he’s exempt, but … I don’t think that’s true?
From the NHL rulebook:
For the purposes of the foregoing, the term “professional season” shall: (A) for a Player aged 18 or 19, mean any season in which such Player plays in eleven (11) or more Professional Games (including NHL Regular Season and Playoff Games, minor league regular season and playoff games, and games played in any European professional league, while under an SPC), and (B) for a Player aged 20 or older, mean any season in which such Player plays in one or more Professional Games (including NHL Regular Season and Playoff Games, minor league regular season and playoff games, and games played in any European professional league, while under an SPC).
By 2021 Zadina will have accrued three professional seasons since signing his SPC. He played almost a full season in the minors in 2018-19 before splitting 2019-20 between the AHL/NHL, and then there’s this upcoming year (which he’s already started in the Czech league.)
I think people have mistakenly assumed Zadina is exempted for the same reason other 2018 draft picks from the CHL who didn’t make the NHL right away (like Quinn Hughes, Barrett Hayton, and Joe Veleno) are exempt. But in 2018-19, Hughes went back to the NCAA. Hayton and Veleno went back to the OHL. Almost all juniors drafted did, because the transfer agreement gave them no other choice. But because of a technicality, Detroit was able to send Zadina to the AHL and get his professional career started early.
Remember too that Mantha had to be protected for the Vegas draft even though he had only played 11 or more NHL games in one season up to that point, as he had played two full seasons in the AHL in the preceding years (so, again, three professional seasons).
TL/DR: Unless I'm overlooking something, I'm pretty sure Zadina is NOT exempt from the expansion draft, even though everyone seems to think he is.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
EDIT: The best I can come up with on the "I'm overlooking something" front is that maybe due to Zadina's ELC "sliding" in 2018-19, that year isn't considered a "professional season under his SPC" even though he played a full professional season. (Mantha is not in the same boat since his professional career started at age 20, hence no slide.) I think that makes sense but it would be nice to see that clarified, since all the sites I've read give the logic of Zadina's exemption as "only two NHL seasons played," which is at best misleading. |
