Thanks Theo - I don't think he lasts til 17, but you have to look at a team like Mtl, who drafted Price. What has he won? Maybe the goalie does not need to be the best player on the team.
I think for me defense is the area that this team needs the most help with. (Defense to me means defensive forwards). So saying that, my focus if I am in the draft room is best available 200ft player. |

Has an Habs fan, Price have never had any good team to compete for the Cup.
But there’s pretty good goalie that hav even draft early that won the cup tho. Better having a good goalie then a fight between, ask the Flyers till the young star joined them. They’ve been years without any good goalies. Could say the same for Islanders, Edmonton etc.
It doesn’t have to be your best player, I agree, but it has to be good though and can handle 50-60 games+ |

Hey PE. You are right, the goalie does not have to be the best player on the team. I will argue, however, that it is better to have a great one than an average one. I think it's a bit of a false dichotomy in asking "what has he won?". He is but one player on the team. I think the better question is "is it better to have Price, or not to have him?". I am all for drafting the best available player. If that's a goalie, so be it, and hopefully he reaches his potential with CHI. |

Thanks Chunk - My question should have been worded - What has the team won since drafting him? I agree with the best player available, but I also think that needs to be in the area where the team has the biggest need. I also believe Goalies should be drafted in later rounds. Just me......

Tampa has done pretty well drafting Vasilevsky in the first round.

Hey, you are not alone. Most teams don't draft goalies in the first round. That could be due to the long development curve required, or simply the fact that there is rarely first round talent available at the goalie position. I'm not going to pretend to know. |

Don't the Blackhawks still have rights to Alexis Gravel, as well? |

And there lies the problem, we don’t have enough 200’ wingers. If we keep Strome, then Saad needs to be on his line as well as another 200’ wing. This is why it’s mind boggling that so many posters want to get rid of Saad. - Angotti
Funny you said that as Saad is the guy that I originally thought of but he always seems to end up back on Toews line.
I agree...need more of those types not less.

I am all for putting a package together to move up in the draft to get Askarov .He is a special player and will be in the NHL in one or two years at most . And I would not be shocked to see him go 5th to Detroit . I would be ok if the HAWKS mortgaged some of their own youth to move up to get Askarov . Boqvist Entwistle our top two picks could move us up to a spot where we have a shot to pick the future Vezina Trophy winning goalie . |

The Hawks did not offer Gravel a contract when his rights expired earlier this year. I believe he is still not with an NHL organization. |

While I still believe in the best player available philosophy (so draft Askarov at 17th if he is still on the board and considered the best available amongst the options), I do agree with you that it would be ideal to draft skaters who can play defense.
My priorities will always be compete level plus defensive awareness and ability. It's great to get offensively gifted players but not so great if they're lost in their own end.
That's why I would stay away from Noel Gunler (F) and Jeremie Poirier (D), for example. Neither commit to defense. And in Gunler's case, he is pretty inconsistent all over the ice. |

Bruins aiming for Ekman-Larsson if Krug is no longer an option for them, thus continuing to make DeBrusk rumored on the market.

Ilya Sorokin. His name came up at the deadline. What about a Beaudin for Sorokin based deal? |

I doubt the Islanders move Sorokin, he's their goalie of the future. |

Yes, Darth. Agreed. I will add..........that one part of the equation how to advance the next round in the playoffs when you have a very tough opponent, is to have top goaltending. Sorokin has demonstrated he could be really good. Certainly better than the average rated quality the NYI have used lately. I would not trade him.
I would strongly consider us trading a good prospect such as Beaudin (as was suggested) if this is a conditional trade of first round.draft choices. Teams just rarely get an opportunity to draft a top rated goaltender worthy of first round selection. You can go through a lot of prospets in the later rounds before one of them is among the few whom develops into a very good NHL netminder.
Sure you find NHL goaltenders with selection in later rounds but they are usually just descent to average AFTER many years development. Florida took a kid in round one recently whom I think is going to be good. (Spencer Knight i think is his name). So Tallon will get credit for one first round pick (outside the first and third) whom turns out as a good pick. |

I ask you this, would you trade your first rounder for Vasilevskiiy? Even if it was in the top 2-10 range? If you would the answer is clear, Detroit could very well take the kid. |

The Isles have patiently waited for this future star to arrive. There is no chance he is traded until they see what they have. The guy is going to be a stud.

I still think Krug will be resigned last minute. The Bruins must realize the major loss he would be to their potent powerplay. I think the Oilers should be hot after Krug. Adding Krug and an upgrade in goal and they could be very dangerous. |

Julie Robenheymer this morning on NHL radio said Askarov could go as high as 4th to the Red Wings. He is starting off strong in the KHL

Be interesting to see the return one nut brings. Debrusk has turned into a pretty decent player.

Hi Theo! Long time lurker, first time poster. My boys introduced me to hockey, and I'm hooked on it more than I care to admit. In your opinion, would Stan consider swapping picks to move up in the draft to select Askarov? |
