Yeah the problem is there was not much else out there. Not ideal but in 3 years we will probably be rebuilding anyways. |

Both Marky and Tanev have juice left in the tank, and I think they will both perform a bit better under a more structured team D... but I think the 3 years thing is true. These contracts are going to start to look back on that back half, but the Flames are set up to win in the next couple seasons, not 4 years down the road.
Sad to see the longtime Canucks go, hate to see them multiple times a year now, but glad they didn't sign them to these deals either. |

WOW. Lay out all of the flames contracts next to this one and this one is just an albatross (save for Lucic). Probably worse than the Brouwer contract. It has buyout candidate written all over it. All I can say is I hope he is the defenceman being exposed in the expansion draft. Haven't even watched Tanev play one game in a flames uniform and I already want him gone. This money could have been spent much better elsewhere. Stecher would have carried a lot less risk if all we're looking to do is pluck ex-Canucks. Tanev is now being paid only 2 million less than Krug. That's nuts. This contract eats up a lot of options. Now we basically have only enough money left to pay Mang and then plug the rest of the holes with scrubs. I thought this afternoon the flames were moving in the right direction with the Markstrom signing but this move just undermines wether or not we're going to be a better team than last year now. |

While I agree that players like his can deteriorate, look at trelivings draft picks and the guys he’s signing. “guy who hates to lose, Might not have the most skill but leaves it out there on the ice every night, this guys a warrior etc....” Over the last few years the flames have shown to give up / not show up etc... if I had to pick between a guy like Brodie and a competitor like tanev I’d take tanev all day long. Treliving is building a heart and soul hate to lose team it’s it’s something we desperately need |

You could make this same argument with any UFA D available this year including Brodie, Barrie and even Pietrangelo and Krug. Brodie just got 4 x 5 mil and i'm not sure Tanev is a downgrade from TJ. Krug signed for 7 years so the backend of that contract is a much bigger liability than the Tanev 4 year deal. Yes there is always risk when you play in UFA and BT's past record speaks for itself but I am personally happy with the direction this off season is taking. |

In addition to last year his play was deteriorating, it was also one of the youngest versions the Canucks have iced for some time. Guys like Bieksa Kesler, the sedins are gone. Guys like elder has shown his age and they are playing with 18 year old kids at the wheel. Organically your defensive numbers will drop. You may say but look at Markstrom his numbers went up. But that’s normal for a goalie who gets a workload. Look at Ryan miller in buffalo and when he goes to a great defensive team like St. Louis he couldn’t stop a puck. |

You could also say Monahan is paid only 2 million less than Crosby Or Monahan is paid more than McKinnon and that’s nuts too. You can’t look at contracts like this |

Not to argue but wasn’t Quinn Hughes tanev’s partner for most of the season.
I don’t know the numbers but while Hughes did light it up, a rookie D that plays that style can also lead to a number of odd man rushed when mistakes are made. I’m not saying those numbers might not be accurate I’m just curious if circumstance plays a larger variable than actual decline. |

Hamonic 2.0. and more expensive. Hopefully he's not just flip the puck out back to the opposition bad Dman Hamonic is. I hope Kylington and Valimaki are ready to play. Not sure how we can sign Mangiapane and fill in our roster now, there's hardly any cap space left. |

Huh?? What makes you think we cant sign Mangi???? Is the season starting next week? Mangi is a RFA with Arb rights, he wont get more than 3.0 mill on a bridge.
Why all the fire alarms already?
## Note: Kubalik on Chicago had 46 points, 30 goals & got a 2 year 3.7mill per contract. Magpie had 32 points & 17 goals, me thinks an arbitrator would place him in that 2.5-2.8 mill range. Now if Tre can lock him up on a 5 year deal at 3.5 per, Id be happy. After Tanev, Markstrom & Buddy Robinson, we still have almost 7 mill.
Valamaki, Kyllington are on lower pay grades. Lots of room. |

We also have Derek Ryan set to make just over 3 million to center the 4th line. If we need the cap space there’s an easy move.
Also I wouldn’t sleep on kinvall being able to step into the 3rd pair RD slot. He’s got great numbers in the Swedish league. |

Spent all day yesterday saying this exact thing - agreed.Lots of room - as time goes on, the remaining UFA's are gonna get cheaper and cheaper |

Haha I was even just trying to make the math work for toffoli but we were about a million short to fill out the roster if he signed for 5 AAV and we moved on from Ryan.
Realistically though if we were to move Derek Ryan we could either bring in a guy like Kahun or split his 3 million cap hit between a player like Trevor van Reimsdyk and if we’re fine with looch being on the 3rd Kyle Clifford on the 4th line.

I like Clifford, would have gone for him rather than re-signing Rinaldo (two way deal mind you) |

Todd Cordell: The Calgary Flames made a risky bet on Chris Tanev - ToddCordellCGY
Not sure why so much hate. We need a guy that is more stay at home and clear the crease.
He played really well in playoffs last year.
As someone mentioned might do a little better with more structure as well.
If he gels with Gio might be just what the doctor ordered to allow Gio to enter the rush more. |

Who would have thought Tanev‘s defensive numbers would dip when his team’s top four adds Quinn Hughes and Tyler Myers?
Did you see the difference in the Canucks’ style of play last year? They played river hockey half the time.
Fvck’s sake, Todd. |

While there wasn’t much to him I think we benefitted from having Ronaldo on the team last year.
He may only get in half the amount of games he’s a good guy to plug into the lineup when the rest of the team needs a fire lit under their a$$. As well from listening to looch on spittin chiclets he sounds like a great guy to have around the team. At league minimum (even if it was 1 way he would likely pass through waivers anyways) I don’t see why not. I’d rather have him sit in the press box than a prospect that needs playing time in order to develop |

Wonder if Treliving was also factoring in Markstrom on this signing? Some insurance on the 6mill paycheck, to put some familiarity in front of him? Not saying that's the right call, but maybe part of it. Still a steep contract though. I guess we'll see. Hold onto your butts. |

You guys think we still make a run at Hall? Obviously Tre would have work to do, but I don't see them going in with the same forwards, somethings gotta change there, I would think. Top line didn't do much, if anything, 5vs5. If they do make a run, they would need to ship someone off. |

Dunno - would definitely mean some wheeling and dealing would be necessary, which if he's smart, he would have Hall sign and stay silent for a couple of hours and swing a Johnny deal in the dark.
I can't see it though
