Thank you as always Carol!
Now Imagine Benning turns around and trades Nate to Boston for Carlo, Debrusk.
I also find it funny that some people on hockey forums were wanting a dman like Nate, and now complaining that we have him due to his cap hit. |

Thanks Carol, I love this deal! Was a bit worried when we lost out on tanev. Expected the other two to walk. Really like holtby signing as well.
@realitychecker contingency plan is business strategy 101. If you plan a, b c and d there’s also a couple contingency plans as well. Again, they likely had the deal in place and (again) mccrimmon tried to deal him elsewhere. Call it luck if you want i guess. Lucky we didn’t sign barrie or krug too i guess in that case, we got a much better all around dman. He and hughes as a pair is a major hockey boner |

thanks for the business advice, tips.
anyway, this is a good trade for the canucks. that we can agree on. i find it humorous how some people get so defensive about needing to defend jb. even when he does something good, he has to be made out to be some sort of infallible futurist! |

Of course not, Vegas signed Pietrangelo and Benning called him up and said "I'll give you a 3rd for Schmidt." McPhee then said "Nobody else called me in the last 5 minutes so sure why not?"
Let's face it, this deal was agreed upon previously provided AP signed in Vegas. It may not have been their first plan (OEL, Barrie, Tanev on a 2 year term, then Schmidt) but he probably become one real quick when he knew that Schmidt would be available at some point once AP signed. |

It's even more amazing that he makes a good trade and people instantly start bs'ing that he was lucky, or that he has no plan. JB had a plan, we all knew what it was, and he executed it. His plan was to get a dman that improved our top 4 and he found it. |

JB got rewarded for working the phones along with a cheap price.

Exactly
McPhee/Benning had the Schmidt deal in their back pockets assuming Petro signed with the VGK
As that deal became more likely (and I'm sure Benning was kept in the loop) Benning kept his powder dry regarding capspace and VGK pulled the trigger on it just as Petro put pen to paper
It's possible the Canucks had a last minute shot at Toffoli but with the Petro deal pending Benning let it go knowing Schmidt was likely on his way |

I'd have to assume this was a contingency for a while. Everyone knew Pietro was highly likely to sign in Vegas and they'd have to move someone. Van had their ear for a while, so it was just executing when the time was right.
It's not like JB spontaneously got someone from Buffalo because they out-of-nowhere signed Taylor Hall. I'd have to think, like you said, working the phones for so long there was a lead in to this. |

here's the thing: it doesn't have to be one way or the other. it can have elements of both.
example: petey was a homerun of a draft pick. an absolute winner! great job jb/scouting staff.
but it's also lucky that 4 teams didn't pick him.
that doesn't mean that it's all luck and jb didn't have any influence. it's just about looking at the complete picture.
the problem is that in this thread, the camps are so divided that anything that resembles context is labeled "hate," and anything positive is "slurping." |
