When Vegas made their picks, of the 30 teams, 13 were defencemen. Defencemen come at a premium and provide opportunities as trade assets. Players like Bean and Lauzon also should be considered prospects and options to start in the AHL.

If the Hawks leave Zadarov unprotected and he is selected by Seattle it can only be viewed as a monumental failure by Stan Bowman. Net result would be that the Hawks gave away Saad for nothing. Saad should have been traded for picks and prospects.

Posted separately, but there are at least three players on the list that should be left unprotected before Zadorov, or I fully agree, you can say with confidence that Stan was fleeced on Saad deals three times.

I'm not convinced that Stan will not move Zadorov (again) for the picks that are coveted at the trade deadline given what he brings and what the playoffs demand.

Nylander has top 6 skill? Unless he pulls a complete 180 this season, I wouldn't waste a protection slot on him. Time to acknowledge the sunk cost fallacy and admit that trade was a total failure. Just like the Zadorov trade if he's selected, as another commenter above said.

Hagel and Highmore really the best options for protection?
