And so, I’m turning to the “head shaking news” of the past few days. In what I call bad comedy, it’s been revealed that Tampa is asking for a first round pick for Tyler Johnson.-Jeremy Laura
In a year of absurdities, this one sneaks into the top 10. |

Right?! They’re also hesitant to retain salary. I hear you can buy a 1981 Ford Escort for a cool 50K too.... |

I appreciate the gambit if it was made prior to putting TJ on waivers. Sell the sizzle, etc. But the floor caved in on the market for the player and any leverage went bye-bye. Glad my squad isn't a buyer or seller right now. So much market dislocation right now.

Yep, buyer and seller both wanting to get the best deal possible. I have a feeling that once schedules come out things will start churning a lot faster |

A 1st round pick for Tyler Johnson? Barre-Boulet and a 1st attached to TJ is more like it. Brisebois is living in Fantasy Land. Yzerman should hang the phone up if Brisebois calls. Good luck trying to strong arm Yzerman. |

Yeah, that deal would be like my grandmas coffee. Needs way too much sweetener. |

Man Tampa sure gave out some lengthy and costly contracts that are hurting them now.
As much as i like Yzerman, he made some bad decisions on the dollar value and term, while with Tampa. |

Unfortunately, it happens to a contender. They got a cup, now pay the piper. Stamkos took less to stay (though he only played 1 post season game). If they never won a cup, looks way worse |

Plus Yzerman never saw a flat cap coming either. It's easy to criticize him now. But at the time he signed Tyler Johnson he was still an important player for Tampa. Cirelli wasn't around and Point hadn't emerged yet. Stevie took advantage of the Tampa no tax and gave out NTC's and NMC's to limit the AAV's. .
All GM's do this. Yzerman did a great job of drafting, developing, trading and locking up very good players to team friendly deals. Their impressive depth allowed them to win without an injured Stamkos in the playoffs. Sergachev for Drouin? Fleecing.
Talent wise they should've won 1 or 2 Cups before they finally won this year. But I don't think Tampa fans have anything to complain about. |

I agree. Chicago is feeling the pain, but 3 cups speak for themselves. I think Yzerman’s vision is spot on, and he’s clearly not over committing in Detroit at this point. Eventually, you’ll have to spend more than you may want. |

Everyone in the real world's life is sucking. People privileged enough to play a sport and get absurd amounts of money pay me big money.
They are out of touch. Like Pietroangelo who almost, if not for Vegas's idiocy(amount of players they had to move, already having an up and coming #1rhdman) he would have lost money or term.
Cancel the season if that's what they want.
Meanwhile for a pittance of what they make I'll keep risking my life going ibto their homes and their loved ones who have covid and putting out their fires etc etc.
Guess what a pro athelete mostly from another country wants to tell me how I should think on political issues?
I spend less money and time without hockey on.
Make it easier for me to find other places to spend my money and be entertained. It's better for the gf and kids. They get more time with me and my new hobbies are more fulfilling. Enjoy it when covid goes away and thst $1000 or more I spend on the NHL every year goes to more concerts and other hobbies.
In fact I'm setting a deadline. If they don't stop whining and giving up stuff to make the game work by Januarary 1st--I'm out. I hear them complain to owners about being away from families--I'm out. None of those men had the courage to be deployed and away from their families for over a year in for what many of them make for a game.
Spoiled. |

Chicago feels the pain because of poor asset management. Seabrook came up for contract and they agreed at his age and already obvious decline and signed him and not Panarin?????? |

The Panarin deal, what a disaster. For sure, poor asset management, but on those teams you try to keep those guys around. Yep, it sucks now but with three cups to show for it they more than got their money’s worth. Just have to let those contracts fall off or buy them out. |

Todd Bertuzzi going the other way to (frank) Brisebois up. Roomer is he's gonna yell "Yzerman Forever!" as he steamrolls him to the ground, kinda like that time that he....too soon? |

Hey all, quick update. The Northern Division in the ECHL just cancelled for the season. I still think more is coming. For people who called my concerns idiotic, well, hoping this is at least a minor wake up. Colleges, ECHL, and it’s hard to believe the AHL has everything they need in place
Total of 8 teams have opted out of the ECHL season. https://www.prohockeyrumo...-home=true&post-id=129076 |

Another update - players being asked to defer an ADDITIONAL 13% (total 23% plus 20% escrow). Reality is setting in quickly.
Insult to injury, 8 players are unable to defer 10% even if salary is completely taken due to signing bonuses (we talked a bit about this). 4 of those players are in Toronto (Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Muzzin). That’s going to cause some hard feelings...
Due to that, the deferral “shortfall” at 23% is over 25M |

Seems like the whole hockey world is grinding to a halt as we battle the 2nd round of COVID. With the players unwillingness to go to prorated salary, will there be a season? That will put a real damper on any trade or signing activity. You can't expect owners to allow deal making with such uncertainty! |

They’re using the added “deferment” as pro rating. Players have softened a little, but want to know what the owners are conceding at this point. I honestly think we’re farther off than we though a few days ago. The collegiate division Jack Adams plays in has had 8 of 12 teams cancel. IVY league has cancelled. ECHL has teams dropping off. If teams can’t run the ECHL, the AHL is even further off (way more expensive). The ECHL was going to model scenarios for the AHL. Even if players agree to the 23% defer plus 20% escrow, there is still 25 mil not recovered due to signing bonuses. At some point someone has to say “uncle” |

I’m drifting that direction. It’s more than slightly irritating that the leadership just lets out small bits of info. Once I started my own number crunching it looked bad. Glad we’ve got kids playing overseas. Those jobs are going to be in even higher demand |

I'm wondering if this season is lost, will the players contracts be tolled a year? Or will they remain? Remember after the lockout in 2004/05 the NHL returned and player contracts were tolled a year. |
