Carol Schram: The Canucks' North Division gets tougher as Habs & Senators make more moves With the opening of training camp less than a week away, some of the Vancouver Canucks' Canadian rivals are continuing to add pieces to their rosters in what's looking to be a very tight and competitive North Division.

Thanks Carol,

I agree that the road to the postseason just got a little tougher for Vancouver.

Again, they draft really well but I believe great development creates more than just skills and IQ, it cultivates player pride in the franchise that drafts them. It propagates a team first attitude and the desire within the player to do what they can to ensure team success whether at the AHL or NHL level.

I’m not sure if a team first culture exists within that franchise.

- bloatedmosquito

Fair enough but what makes you believe the guys they traded away didn’t have pride in being a Senator? Their issues when it comes to moving players out has 100% to do with years of financially strapped owners. Bruce Firestone & Eugene Melnyk.

At the end of the day they’ve drafted and developed a bunch of players, which goes way back to even the Hossa, Daniel Alfredsson, Andreas Dackell, Chris Neil, Mike Fisher days, that’ve have become good NHL players in Ottawa.

First off thank you Carol.

I don't care what anyone says I think this is not the year to make big moves. So many things wrong with trying to squeeze this year in to get the new TV contract , but I think it is an excellent year to see what you have as a team.

There will be some pretty big names next year for free agents like Ovechkin Hall Hamilton and a lot of teams will be locked in already. Teams will be looking to move players and there should be another deal coming down the pipeline.

Canucks will have players on a show me year like Virtanen Gaudette and Brock.

More importantly they will have a bunch of new players like Hogz OJ Rathbone Raffery Lind trying to convince Canucks they are NHL regulars.

If Petey Hughes JTM Bo Schmidt and Demko have a big year it really doesn't matter what Roussel Beagle or Sutter do.

Gotta admit with all of the hype going into the WJC, and me not seeing too much of his game to this point, Podkolzin has been a disappointment. I keep waiting for him to find another gear and elevate his game. Take over a period or 2. He seems pretty passive so far.

I think Lind will get lost in the numbers game in VAN.

For a guy who's been playing with men, and was expected to dominate in this tournament. Still early though.

More than likely . He may not even make the squad but he is getting close. It would be nice to see what he can do . I don't think he is ready yet but the impressive showing he had at playoff training camp leaves him at an outside chance. Very outside

Might be able to move him and a pick for a rental at the TDL.

Key players caught talking smack about the team's coaching staff, systems, special teams, and practice structure doesn’t portray a franchise that has an exceptional development system worthy of anyone’s attention (at least at the NHL level).

I would say the Canucks also do a fine job of turning late picks into NHL players but I wouldn’t celebrate it too much because of other major concerns about the franchise.

This. It’s more than likely that most of the prospects that are discussed on here will fall victim to the numbers game.

I think you’ll find players in every organization talkin poop about one thing or another, it’s not uncommon, also, a lot of that comes directly from poor ownership.

Guys like Hossa, Alfresson, Spezza, long time Senators, never wanted to leave but ultimately did because of their ownership situation.

Why was he expected to dominate?

This is just my opinion but I said before the tournament he is strong on the puck , wins battles on the boards, can make good passes and will probably score 5-8 goals in a NHL season.

I have never felt he would dominate. I think he is good in his own end , will play mostly in the opposite end of the ice.

He is very much like Loui who Travis slotted in with Bo and Pearson more than anyone last year. Loui had 6 goals in 49 games last year and 4 of them were in the empty net. It was a very effective line.

It is not Podkolzin's style to dominate, but he is very effective at getting you the puck.

You can thank Twitter Canucks and the media for that. People in here pump Pod & Hogs tires non stop. At the end of the day they're still unproven NHL prospects.

I think Hoglander is still wait and see.

I don't have any doubts about Pod and still think he will immediately move onto Bo's line within two weeks.

The Russian team does not look sharp at all but they do have a few NHL players.

The Pods and Hogs thing has been funny to read on here however. The 'top 6' camp and the 'middle 6' camp and the 'bottom 6 camp' and the 'AHL camp lol

To say the least it will be interesting to see where they end up when all is said and done.

For me personally, I'm not expecting dominance. Just more presence on the ice. It's his 3rd tourney, he's 19, he has a leadership role on a top tier team. He's been invisible so far aside from drawing 1 penalty.
