The most he and Ryan J have produced combined in one season is fewer than 30 goals. That’s not a lot for 16 million….

lol, not a lot at all! even if he wanted to come to detroit, stevie y would be insane to take him. there are other players on the preds who would look (and play) good for the wings. someone like ekholm or ellis would work to stabilize your backend really well.

Oh for sure. The only way Duchene or RyJo get moved is with a sweetener, and they’re not coming to Detroit. I just shake my head when I look at those deals. Arvidsson is a good player, but the cost before the deadline was pretty steep. I don’t know if there are any fits that would work, but you never know. For sure though the 8 million dollar duo are not anything you’d want to touch at this point.

yah this offseason will be crazy not only because of the expansion draft, but also some teams like the panthers (among others) who reported losses of up to $29-$35 million from covid/no fans who will likely be looking to shed salary regardless of how well they performed this year.

you guys are in a similar spot to where the avs were when vegas came into the league; meaning, you’ll easily protect your core players and whoever is exposed/taken won’t be a huge hit. you have a ton of draft picks and stevie y seems to be similar to joe sakic in his patience of maintaining a vision and sticking to it without selling off important assets.

it takes time and patience, and i know yzerman has said patience. i think the wings will struggle for another few years - especially once we’re back to regular divisions next season - but you guys aren’t like a decade off from being competitive. if he plays his cards right and young guys such as zadina continue to develop well, i’d imagine the wings will be a playoff team with cup aspirations within 4-5 years again

Very cool, thank you for that. Sakic was so purposeful not only in who he brings in but who he let go. The group is so strong, and I”m waiting for MacKinnon to get the respect he deserves (in relation to Matthews/McDavid). Joe made an incredible salary structure and the team plays for each other. I do believe Yzerman will do that too. No rush, send players packing if they’re not contributing. It will be something special for sure

with you 100%. yzerman and sakic were similar players during the height of the avs/wings biggest rivalry times, and now they are likewise very much like one another as GM’s.

i have all the respect in the world for steve, he was an amazing player who - despite my hate for the wings at the time (i’m sure any detroit fan old enough to recall the late 90’s / early 2000’s shares the same sentiment from those times about the avs) - was someone i always loved as a player. def feel like steve will build a team in the same vein as joe has done.

i would KILL for an eventual COL/DET stanley cup final one day. and the way both GM’s handle their business, it’s a real possibility down the line. avs have a bit of work ahead of them in the offseason; landeskog, makar, and grubauer all need new contracts, and then mackinnon needs one in a few years. i see no way mack, rants and landy don’t finish their careers as avs, but in the salary cap era nothing is guaranteed.

i’m rooting for the wings to get good sooner than later. no residual hate remains as the rivalry is long dead.

Nashville has plenty of good players, but they are either a bit too old or a bit too overpaid to acquire. Their good young players will be hard to shake from them unless you take one of their overpaid vets. A couple of picks for Fabro, Kunin or Tolvenen would be Ok, But the preds are not gonna deal them without including an over paid vet. Ekholm will move, but will be too expensive to acquire.

Exact same boat. It was so intense in the 90s. It feels like a different game altogether. A new rivalry would be incredible. I’m amazed at how many guys that were on those two teams are running the league now. They were special times and special players.

In the meantime I wouldn’t mind seeing Carolina and Colorado. Both young teams with strength and skill. That could be something special

I think you nailed it H2. Nashville has to get some solid returns, and it would make sense for a contending team to go after a couple players. Not necessarily a fit for the rebuild

Panthers will indeed be looking to shed some salary, but only the kind that is seen as deadweight.
The Panthers didn’t lay off any of their employees, they were fully paid throughout the pandemic shutdown. They’ve also just broken ground on a major project to build a new training/public use facility in downtown Fort Lauderdale. FL’s owner has deep pockets, and seems committed to building a winning organization.

Having Duchene and Johansen as 1 & 2 centers is a bust. They have great agents to grab the contracts they did.

Johanson had a nice season prior to his trade to NSH and looked like his production was on an upwards trajectory towards elite. I really liked his game. So losing Jones in addition to seeing that season be the apex of his production in ADDITION to all the ADDITION with his salary is, indeed, just brutal.

DET should not deal with NSH. There is nothing there for DET age-wise that makes sense. Ekholm is more than an adequate stopgap, I suppose, but that's one of NSH's only alluring pieces that it can dangle at the '22 trade deadline for a high pick. The ask would be too high for Steven.

I liked him too. At the time, Nashville was an embarrassment of riches on the blue line. CBJ pegged Johanson as their best center ever. I also really liked Subban coming over. It seemed like they were on the way up all around. Things changed in a big way.

You’re probably right. Trades are like farts and relationships. If you push too hard it’s crap.

Yeah, I said Smashville was out in your last blog. Finally guessed correctly

Ekholm is the only player I'd consider, but the asking price is too steep, I'm sure. Smashville needs to wallow in their own slop for another year or 2 before they blow it up, and The Captain needs to avoid Smashville like a house of ill-repute on pay-day.

Nothing to see here. Move along.
