Toronto is built to lose in the first round. 50% of their cap is in 4 forwards. Their defense is below average and their goaltending is mediocre at best. Trading their first for Foligno was a joke. Especially when Savard went for a first as well (seems neither are working but was still dumb). When losing Tavares causes Marner and Matthews to score one goal, then I'm not sure they're worth $20m combined.
There is a reason McDavid and Matthews had career years, they played in a garbage division.
Anyhow, get on the phone and check on the price for Nylander. I assume the Leafs will be in on Jones though and without their first will probably dangle Nylander at them. |

Dude, you’re gonna get yelled at!! It’s apparently blasphemy to question that lineup! Nylander was called “Toronto’s best forward” in the series. No clue what they’re going to do |

Compare that lineup with Edmonton's. So so similar. All Edmonton needs is Ovi to sign there this offseason, overpay him, and then have zero depth in the playoffs. |

Not Nylander, they need to trade Marner

Both Edmonton and Toronto have deeply flawed rosters. They really need to blow it up like the Rangers did starting with "The Letter" to the fans. Both teams' problems are not going to get better with time. Gotta break some eggs to make the omelet! |

Seems like the majority of Leaf fans want Marner gone not Nylander. They could offer up Marner for Jones but not sure the Jackets need another high priced winger. They could possibly make that trade for Marner and then trade Laine to L.A for Turcotte+.
Problem is would Marner want to go to Columbus...he might just to get the hell away from all the crap storm Leaf fans are throwing at him now. |

Before the playoffs it was Nylander not Marner. Doubt 7 games changes that. |

I’m not arguing, I’m just scared for both of our safety. We’re going to be mobbed with star charts and beaten with stats |

NYLANDER HAD A VERY GOOD PLAY-OFFS!
Marner would be the one to trade to CBJ for Jones and Elvis! Nylander has a better cap hit, and with the savings from Marner they could re-sign Hyman!
Edit: and after acquiring Marner, CBJ could trade Laine for a center......I would trade him to LA for 2 centers! Anderson-Dolan and Turcotte! or to Buffalo for Reinhart and Risto! (CBJ may have to add a minor pick) |

And there it is. Mike Rupp just said it’s not construction, it’s execution. I.E., the team is fine, they just didn’t win. He looks like he was kicked in the gut. |

Go take a read in the Leafs thread. Majority all want Marner gone tomorrow not Nylander. Apparently Marner is getting blasted on social media too. Hell it wouldn't surprise me if he got booed at home games if he is still with the Leafs next season. 11 mil per season and he has 0 goals in the last what 18 playoff games. He is a playmaker first and that is what he known for but vast majority of fans are pointing the finger at him as the one to go for this meltdown. GM might not have much of a choice but to trade him if the fans turn on him like they did on Larry Murphy. |

The leafs didn't lose this series because of the way they were constructed. I want to make it clear, I'm not saying that they are constructed well. I agree, they need better defense. I'm just saying, this was not the problem this series. The defense wasn't the problem this series, and should have been good enough to get the leafs out of the North devision and into the Semis. Once there, they would probably get destroyed by either Tampa or Boston, the way those two teams are playing.
There were two real problems. The first, Price stole games for the Habs, and the Campbell couldn't steal one for the leafs. The 2nd, the leafs tops players didn't get it done. Marner was garbage this series, and while Matthews play was better, he still couldn't bury one when the team needed it most. So, I'll agree the defense isn't good enough to win them a cup, but it wasn't the issue in this series. |

I keep meaning to do a post, but things are interesting and busy right now. A few blogs ago was my 400th since becoming the Detroit Red Wings blogger. It may not seem like a lot, but these past two seasons have been so bizarre and different. You all hung in there through 10 months of no hockey, and continue to come back day after day. I’m shocked and blessed by the time you spend here each week. Of all the tough lessons I’ve learned in doing this, the greatest is to respect the time that you all invest in this. Whether you like, love, dislike or even hate what I’ve had to say, you have chosen to spend your personal time to invest in this blog. Thank you all for letting me live this dream. |

Obviously this is somewhat facetious. Cooper’s a lawyer, he can’t get into a faith healer without bursting into flames.

TOR should dangle Mitch at CLB for Jones and that first back.
You need four contributing forward lines, and TOR doesn’t have it. TOR was pathetic tonight. Juxtapose that with the Isles. I can’t tell who is out there most of the time (aside from Barzal) because they all play the same game. EDM has the same issue as TOR. And when I write contributing, I’m not talking goals. You need forwards who simply skate to drain the opponent. Andrew Shaw’s only value is playoff value. That’s why playoff hockey is different. That’s simply not a regular season necessity but you must have that team make-up if you want to win four, 7 game series in a two month window.
I give credit to Dubas for trying something different, though. The league is short on new ideas. |

That’s a great point about Dubas. The league is a recycle bin of coaches and ideas. I watched Mike Rupp breakdown both games tonight. He talked about Toronto, in complete shock. TSN actually wrote that the Leafs were built to win the cup and they can’t believe they’re out. Good grief. But then, Rupp covered the Isles and raved about how they’re rolling 4 lines. It wasn’t a concern with Toronto, but all important to Long Island. It’s like there’s a complete disconnect when he talks about the Leafs. Everything just goes out the window. Of course, the irony of how much better NYI has been since Tavares left and Barry came to town isn’t brought up. That team was supposed to be in the gutter when JT left. |

It’s the hardest trophy to win because every spot on the roster has to be occupied by a legit NHL’er...or someone posing as a legit NHL’er for 2 months (think Fernando Pisani) who goes 100% every shift. That’s absolutely insane and why it’s a magnificent watch. So a championship hockey team should really be measured not by your best 3 players, but probably by the relative strength of your 3 worst players. |
