Not happy with giving up a 2nd round pick for a cap dump. I just hope Yzerman can flip him at the deadline for more and him not suck and get nothing or a 4th at the dealine while retaining salary. |

Jeremy Laura: Leddy to Detroit for Panik,, 52nd pick, and 50% retain - Jeremy Laura
I think this is a good deal.
We get a solid left side D on a one year deal that we should be able to flip for a late first in next years draft which the Wings scouts will have a better handle on than this years draft.
It also opens up a spot for a younger forward. |

Meh! I proposed getting Leddy but not giving up high draft capital for him. he is to be paid $7M in his last year also. My guess is that every team seems to be looking for LD and the supply just is not going to keep up with the demand and the FA would choose a contender. So the Wings have to get their LD via trade. I would guess Stevie would have to spend more draft capital to steer the Krack away from our defense (Stecher), unless another trade is coming tonight. |

Leddy is a UFA after this season so he could be flipped at the deadline too. Same story with Dekeyser (lesser return).
and they are going to probably lose Stecher to the Kraken, |

Wonder if they will pair Leddy with Hronek or Seider. |
|
|
|
While the Leddy trade is not a significant deal, it is not terrible.
On one hand, while he is with the Wings Leddy should provide a good example for the young defenders. He is overpriced, but he can still play as a 3/4 defender. Most importantly, he may be a useful commodity at the trade deadline.
On the other hand, he is a declining defender. NY is thrilled to dispose of his salary. Additionally, if the Wings don't deal him at the deadline, he will almost certainly leave as a UFA after the season. While management may consider him a useful token for the deadline, a second round pick has already been surrendered in the deal. |

The last 3 trades have shown that if you have a 2nd round pick to trade, and additional room, you can get a pretty good player. l wonder how many more trades will happen within the next 24 hours before the protected lists get sent to the league. |

the roster is in flux, big time.
this will change soon but yzerman has nobody signed beyond next season outside of Larkin. and newpower if u want to count him.
interesting to see who he commits to long term. Vrana/Bertuzzi will be resigned but for how long..
also, right now on defense the only people they have signed are Stecher,Dekeyser,Leddy and Sieder. with Stecher probably gone.. |

this and yzerman will be trading players at next seasons deadline.
interesting to see what dekeyser/leddy could fetch at the deadline considering teams always need defensive depth for the playoffs. again, if he choses not to resign either.. |

Yzerman has to lose a few (inconsequential) trades so teams will continue to trade with him. If he’s too good, then teams won’t take his call. It's the long con! |

1 He’s pretty good on the powerplay which we suck at.
2. He puts up top pair production at 5 on 5
3. He doesn’t take penalties
4. He will draw a minimum 2nd back at the deadline. |

Hronek, Cholowski and Lindstrom will be re-signed too (last 2 if not picked for expansion). No doubt Yzerman can go a lot of directions with the cap space and roster flexibility...a nice change from Holland where the Wings had almost no roster flexibility or cap space. |

Islanders had no choice in the matter. They need to sign Pelech sorokin and beauvillier this saves them a little over 4 million in cap. Leddy is an offensive defenseman he had close to 30 assists in the regular season last year. His defensive play is not that good. |

This trade makes no sense. They should have given us Leddy and their 2nd for Panik with salary retained.
We could have signed a free agent defender with similar skill for less money and saved the pick. Hmmmmm |

Hmmmmm - GreenArrow63 Thats what I felt would be a Leddy trade....However, it is doubtful that a similarly skilled defender would sign first with a contender, not the lowly Wings. Look at the lesser skilled defenders the Wings had to sign last year,
Stecher was the only real keeper, Djoos, Merril, Biega, were last resort acquisitions!
Stahl was gained by trade, he may be coming back because the Wings can't attract a better defender unless they seriously overpay them! So if Stevie gets a good LD, he will have to trade for him.

There might be a couple but the wings don't need to give up any more assets for 3/4 dmen or middle six forwards. This deal works because Leddy should be worth a top 50 pick in the 2022 draft at the TDL.
The real opportunity to weaponize cap space is at the draft itself but teams need to know where they stand after expansion before they start dumping money. Good news, everyone can go outside for a few days and come back next week when the action picks up again.

I don't like this one at all. High price to pay for a player who hasn't been good for years.
I mean, if Leddy is the best stopgap LD we think we can get, we should have just brought Djoos back instead. He's arguably better and would have been much cheaper.
Also, with Panik gone, unless further moves or extensions are made, Namestnikov will need to be left unprotected in the expansion draft, which is not the biggest deal but still a minor irritation.
And now, presumably Leddy will be protected. I'm not sure Seattle would take him anyway, but can't risk giving up a 2nd and Panik while retaining salary and getting literally nothing back. I've accepted that Stecher is probably as good as gone (unless Seattle opts for Namestnikov or Svech instead), but still hoping he will be protected. I have absolutely no faith in either Cholowski or Lindstrom. |

I dislike the trade entirely,
My gut reaction when I first read it was, I dont mind Leddy, but id rather have the pick, but truly doubt the player selected at #52 will be anything in comparison to Leddy.
But the more i think about it, Leddy is not really very good and more importantly at 5.5 its basically a bad contract really, so why did we pay AND retain on panick to take it? I dont think this was smart at all. First trade Yzerman has made that i really just cant get behind or see anything positive in. |

Hopefully the Wings pick up a better LD at the draft so Leddy can be sheltered a bit on the 2nd pairing.

Just a quick “thank you” for everyone jumping in on the comments. I’m reading two fairly diverse opinions as far as like it/hate it. Everyone is making good points. Just grateful you’re all coming by to give their 2 cents on this. You make this a dream come true, I appreciate it. |

Just out of curiosity I've been looking through Islanders boards and the consensus seems to be that they understand why the trade was made but are really sad to see Leddy going. Makes me feel better knowing he was pretty well liked there even with a pretty high cap hit. |

Terrible trade. Although some will struggle to admit that. Wasting a 2nd round pick to take on that cap hit. He also won't get much more than a 3rd or 4th rounder if you flip him at the deadline. Would have rather used this 2nd, added another prospect, and acquired Graves who could have been a longer-term asset. We robbed Edmonton on AA. We robbed Washington on Mantha. But this is ugly. |

His cap hit is $5.5M, but his actual salary will be $7M |
