I really like what Waddell did here! I think he can trade KK for the winger he needs, or flip another player and play KK on the wing. He may lose a little, but it gives him options. NYR, Boston, Buffalo, Detroit, and Seattle all need a good C. I think he could just cut a couple $M and wait it out too.

Not worth $6.1, maybe worth the $20 signing bonus.

If I'm not mistaken, if they get KK, they can't trade him for one year.

If Montreal matches, THEY can't trade him....no such stipulation for the Canes though. At least it is not in the Cap-friendly FAQ's.

Doubt anyone is trading for him at $6m before the season. He's not worth it until he proves more effective. Now if he started showing better production in season maybe someone would consider him.

3M/50% retained for a young centre drafted top 3 overall pick. Could be part of a bigger trade for Eichel. Could be sent out to Arizona for one of Fischer, Keller or Kessel. Ducks would offer Silverberg or Rakell for sure. Columbus could offer up Laine for KK+. Dallas could offer up Radulov or even Hintz.
Kaprizov, Fiala and Greenway are all interesting options out of Minnesota. Bertuzzi, Erne and Vrana could all be options to bring in a young high ceiling centre.

I think there’s a lot of teams who would have interest in this type of centre. A lot.

Salary retention doesn’t help with the fact that his next qualifying offer has to be at $6.7 mil. Nobody in their right mind would touch that right now. Honestly, he seems like a major bust so far. If the Canes wanna dramatically overpay for him and give us those picks, it’s not the worst thing ever.

Then, we walk away with the ability to use two first round picks to potentially upgrade the center position.

Good post. If indeed Carolina can trade him to fill a need as you point out there is probably plenty of interest in KK if salary is retained but it's the following yr where a qualifying offer is over 6 mil that would be the problem.

No way Dallas trades Hintz for KK. If Canes keep half his salary Rads is possible.

QO= last year salary + 10%
Unless he has breakout year retaining him might get expensive. They can always not qualify him and let him become UFA

And then sign him to a more reasonable cap hit at term. Which wouldn’t surprise me in the least.

This has to be the dumbest revenge move ever. As a habs fan, i could care less to watch an average player walk away hampering a rival financially and taking their picks is so much better.
How does Aho feel knowing that his 20 point teammate gets paid 6M$.
Talk about making terrible choices in Carolina

Maybe Necas asks for a 6M "show me" deal.

Waddell likely wouldn't have made such a move if he didn't have some kind of agreement in place with KK on a bridge extension for probably less than his 1 year offer. Obviously the Canes will not surrender a 1rst round pick to sign him at 7M even if he doesn't pan out as expected.

Let Dougie walk......

If Dougie didn't wanna sign in Carolina, what did you want Waddell to do? Kidnapp him?

Players with a base salary of over 1M don't get the +10%. It would be 100% of the base salary.

They do. Yet I have suspicions that Kotkaniemi WANTS to be a Cane.
