Carol Schram: How the successful Kotkaniemi offer sheet could impact the Canucks, the NHL With a Plan B in their pocket, the Montreal Canadiens elected to let Jesperi Kotkaniemi move on to the Carolina Hurricanes. That could have ripple effects in how NHL teams do business with their RFAs going forward.

If I was a a team like Buffalo or Ottawa I would strongly consider an offer sheet that Canucks could not match.

Thanks Carol.

He'd have to want to commit to playing for either team. I can't see any young RFA sign for the Sabres at the moment. I see Ottawa as being the preferred destination. But not a chance Melnyk shells out for an offer sheet with the list of players he's let walk or traded before they got paid.

Yes. I think Kotkaniemi is unique though in that he clearly wanted out and the Habs didn't want to move him.

I think the KK situation is very unique: player sort of wanted out, Carolina overpaid for potential, and Montreal's cap situation is poor.

For someone to overpay like that on Petey would be 11 mil+, which is an entirely different league of compensation and your own cap implications.

Carolina was trying to trade for the player and most likely offering same sort of compensation anyways.

Carolina is also a top team in the league where if someone like Buffalo or Detroit sends an offer sheet, maybe KK doesn't sign it because he like Petey would rather be on a contending team instead of a team that's at the bottom of the league.

Which players are you referring to?

I personally liked what they did with their core guys and moved on from them after the off-ice issues surrounding some of the players.

Kk OS was signed due to the relationship and price offered, it was successful because KK is ‘underachieving’. EP is not underachieving so the price is too high (both in terms of AAV and/or draft picks surrendered).

$6M (potentially with an under the table deal for longer at a lower AAV) is a lot different than $10.2M+ and four first rounders.

Benning rated the worst GM in the league. Man, some really hate him. Could care less if he stays or goes, I just want the team to win. Move over Dodgeball, will be the greatest underdog story if he pulls it off haha

These teams that have been mentioned, will also be in line to grab a decent young player who gets waived at start of the season.

Gadjovich will not clear waivers.

All of them. Stone and Zibinejad would be nice in their lineup. Pageau, Foligno...the list goes back a few years as well to guys like Chara and Alfredsson. That's just off the top of my head. Feel free to add.

The Karlsson deal was a very good trade

Also, the acquisition of Chara, by Ottawa was a steal, as was Wade Redden and Jason Spezza

Pageau got a 1st and 2nd and Ottawa used those picks on a highly skilled centre and a massive 6'3 222 lb centre from Russia. Pretty decent additions to a team that is rebuilding.

Chara walked as a UFA. Spezza got traded as he was going into UFA. Redden walked as a UFA to the Rangers wound up collecting his pay in the minors. Bottom line is they all seem to find the door out of town when it's time for some real money to be thrown around.

Chara Zibanejab and Stone have been the only headscratchers in my opinion. The rest were getting rid of players just before they start the downward trend. Something I have wanted the Canucks to do, for decades now.

Foligno for me as well. Didn't like the Hoffman trade but that's another can of worms.

What strategy do you think would be the most successful for an opposing team to try and sign Pettersson (and actually get him)?

1. One year, massive overpayment with the Canucks being tight this season dealing with recapture/buy out etc.

2. Three year (or 4 or whatever) that clears all the remaining RFA years and expires with Petey as a UFA at the highest amount prior ton4 first round picks ($10.2m?).

3. A max 7 year deal at Marner like numbers $11+m per.

If the Canucks can identify the greatest weakness they can plan to overcome it so no matter what they know what their future looks like.

I disagree, there will be 50 better players on waivers at the start of the season, the Canucks won’t have any issues sending him down when there are dozens of transactions per day.

I agree there will be better players available, but some teams are looking for some young talent. Teams like Arizona, Detroit, Anaheim etc. I would bet that some team will claim him.

Perhaps. I wouldn’t worry about it.
