Thanks for the blog Trevor, definitely all aboard on trying to trade for Toffoli. |

Or Josh Anderson. How about Forberg if NSH falls out of the race. |

I love pavelski but that seems like way too much to give for a 37 year old ufa, I’d think a second and meh prospect.
Is he really worth a first plus? |

Toffoli seems like a better choice but is he injury prone or just unlucky a few times? |

Age doesn't really matter when he's still playing at the level he's at and it's only for a few months. Depending on whether Grioux is available or not, Pavelski is probably the best pure rental out there this year and will 100% get at least a first plus unless he doesn't want to play playoff hockey for some reason.
What else could the Flames want in a player? He's a great two-way player who shows up in the playoffs and shoots right. |

This is my train of thought as well. Doubts around his age have been present since he was 34 — if not earlier. Every season since then he has proven he can carry an offence with little to no support. No one has learned this lesson harder than Sharks GM Doug Wilson.
No one available would contribute more to team success than Joe Pavelski.
Sutter loves Toffoli and he will likely be cheaper despite his age and contract term, but the better player is Pavelski. One is a star and one is a really good player. |

Overall, Pav is probably the better player this season, but we lack snipers and RW's. Going for a rental doesn't make a lot of sense. Still need that level of player next year. I have always been a bit concerned with Toffoli's speed, but we have several players that don't need explosive speed to score.
How about we make a play for Chychrun that doesn't include Hanifin going the other way. Dube, Valimaki and a 1st plus B level prospect. Then we use Hanifin in a trade with Montreal for Toffoli. Worry about re-signing Tkachuk in the off-season. If he wants over $9m on a long term deal, then we trade him to STL or some other team that could deal with that. Tkachuk for Kyrou + Thomas or something like that.

How does that make any sense at all for the Flames? Chychrun is barely an upgrade over Hanifin if he is at all. The Flames are giving up a ton of future potential to get marginally better. If the Flames are moving Hanifin, they better be getting back someone a whole lot better than Toffoli. |

100% this is a laughable return, a trade I’d be fine with Edm making .what a joke. |

Exactly, if I’m giving up that much, I want more than an almost 40 year old player for a couple months. Lol |

So Flames fans.
I believe the Flames could finish second in the Pacific. I am going to give too honors to Vegas.
With JG in his potential last season as a Flame, do you go all in and trade this years first plus a top prospect to shore up RW or D?
What would you do? Is this team in a place where you feel you can mortgage the future to try and win this year?
I am all for making trades if it makes us a better team moving forward. But not Into trading firsts to get a couple months of Pavelski. |

If they can keep playing strong hockey going into the deadline then it may be time to bring in another piece. It would better if they acquired someone earlier than later, but a lot of GMs need confirmation that they’re truly out of the mix.
A fun one is a retained Phil Kessel. He’s far from the star he was, but it’s unlikely he demands a 1st this deadline. In a depth role he could be extremely valuable in a deep run. If the Flames can get him at 50% retained (6.8 retained to 3.4 million) for the 2nd they got from Florida in the Bennett trade, then it could pay off big in the later rounds.
Not my favourite option, but could be a fun one to see play out if it happened. A right shooting right wing too. |

It's not trading firsts or top prospects to get Pavelski. It's going to take a single first, which will be late, and a mediocre prospect. That's what the rentals usually go for. The Flames have an overabundance of mediocre prospects. They've got probably 5-6 that might be NHLers but they probably wouldn't miss if they were gone. Kuznetsov is a perfect example. Maybe he becomes a decent bottom-pairing guy, but the odds of him turning into a top 3 guy that they regret getting rid of are practically zero. They also have a decent enough group of prospects that they can afford to skip the first round for a year.
Pavelski is probably going to be the best player available and the best fit for the Flames. The biggest hurdle is going to get him to agree to move to Calgary, let alone in the middle of a pandemic. Trading for Pavelski also helps resign Gaudreau and Tkachuk since it shows the team wants to win and isn't just going to spin its tires for another decade. It sure sends a stronger message than bringing in another Shore, Fantenberg, or Gustafsson A deep playoff run surely wouldn't hurt either.
The Flames have definitely shown enough to go for it. When they're at the top of their game, they can beat anyone except McDavid. Gotta hope for an Eichel vs McDavid first-round matchup. |

Personally I would be OK paying a bit more to get someone with term and a descent AAV versus a rental.
Not sure these guys will be available but players of this ilk is what I would like to see us target .... Gallagher, Konecny, Anderson, DeBrincat, Meier, Gourde etc

Why would you ever want them to take on the albatross contracts that Gallagher and Anderson have? Those are the types of contracts that ruin your team. Gallagher is only a year or two away from the Backlund or Lucic role, and he's signed for 5 more years after this. Anderson has looked like a five-million-dollar player once in his career. None of the other players would ever be available except maybe Gourde, but he's another undersized player who doesn't fit in the Flames and makes too much.
If the Flames want sustained success, they need to keep the money free to resign their players and they need their high-end prospects to turn into something while they're still cheap. Gumming up the cap with Gourde isn't going to help. |

I get your point somewhat on the term remaining on Gallagher and Anderson's contracts however if you have paid attention to other contracts signed this last year 5.5 and 6.5 aren't that albatross like. Chucky and Johnny are both going to be looking for 8 figures and no way we can afford them both plus Mange. Completely disagree on your Gourde evaluation and this leaves me thinking you never watched much playoff hockey the last 2 years! |

Agreed. Spending 5+ million on a third liner (especially one with term) is normally reserved for rebuilding clubs or teams that are universally included on no-trade lists (ie. Montreal and Ottawa). I believe the Habs will need to retain a sizable chunk of these contracts to move these players.
Assuming the Canadian/American boarder remains open, I expect more suitable/affordable additions will become available as the trade deadline approaches. |

You really think it's a good idea to have a breaking down Gallagher on contract for five more years just as the Flames are getting rid of the Backlund and Lucic contracts?
Gourde is fine, but he's already 30, 5'7" 175 lbs, and ideally is a third liner. What does he add the Flames don't already have with Coleman, Dube, and Mangiapane? He doesn't boost the top six and makes too much for bottom six. He's also in the way for the next couple years when the Flames have a bunch of prospects that need to be in the NHL. Pelletier is another undersized guy who has a higher ceiling than Gourde. Paying Gourde 5 million would also make it nearly impossible to bring in a top-line player to replace Gaudreau or Tkachuk if they leave.
Pavelski is a better option this year than all three of the players you listed and doesn't hinder them at all going forward. He may even fall in love with Calgary and stick around for another year or two. |

I do think acquiring Gallagher or Anderson is a good idea if Mony at 6.3 per is going back the other way as I have stated.
If the draft was today our 2022 1st would be 19th overall so im not so sure I want to be giving that up for a rental. |

Monahan only has a year left. That's good for the Flames.
Why would Montreal have any interest in Monahan if they're selling off assets? You don't want to trade firsts, but it's going to take multiple firsts if you want Gallagher and Montreal to take on Monahan's contract. |
