Karine Hains: Golden Girls No, I’m not talking about the American TV show starring the late great Betty White but about this year’s edition of the Women’s Canadian National Team who won the gold medal game last night against their bitter rivals, the USA National Team.

from the last thread:

pretty funny at the end when the 'Muricans scored while MPP was in the penalty box, it's as though she wanted to be sure the game-winning goal was hers lolll

Was still hers as she had scored Canada’s second goal as well

As much as I agree that there should be some sort of push from the NHL to give the women a better platform, I can't name one person I know who has ever watched a WNBA game.

oh

hey, it was late, so...

anyway it was nice to see them playing such dominant hockey throughout the tournament, it was very refreshing compared to what the men's team did, or god forbid to how the habs are playing right now lol

I think there are certain issues though with the WNBA, such as their refusal to lower the net a bit so that there could be more slam dunks, which could potentially make the game more entertaining and generate more interest.

If Poulin is joining the Habs when she retires (per the roomers) then the management team is doing their job and deserve a high five.

Even then, not enough people would watch it for broadcasters to want to put big $$ to buy the rights for the games. Same for women's hockey.

I disagree on two points.

One, the games against the US were one goal games. While they were the better team, it wasn’t dominating. Add in the US was playing without one of the best female players in the game, and you can hardly claim any superiority. Canada vs USA hockey is always fun, as IRS razor thin, either way.

Two, if a women’s league can’t stand and make money on its own, why should the NHL lose money to prop it up? The NBA loses a ton on the WNBA. Somehow, losing money is a virtue? I have no problem with women attempting to play in the NHL, or having their own league, but to lose money doing so, doesn’t make any sense.

It’s kind of like the NCAA Basketball tourney, the kids play their hearts out, but less than 10% of them will play in the NBA. That’s just life. If we’re going to start a WNHL league that’s a guaranteed money loser, does that mean we need to expand the NBA or NHL to 60 teams, so more young men can play? Of course the answer is no. At what point do you draw the line?

Bottom line is, unless you have some benevolent billionaires who don’t mind losing a ton of money every year, it’s not going to happen.

And please don’t think it’s a chauvinistic post. It’s just economics and reality.

oh, I haven't done any market studies about it or whatever but technically if you have a more entertaining product you'll have more people watching.

For sure, but the only women's sport that seems to be attracting lots of people is tennis.

I have very little hope we unload him before the deadline.

Unless we keep a part of his salary at least.

How dare you show your face around here after all the horrible stuff you wrote about the Habs.

And don't give me the "yeah... but they do suck argument" I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!
