Based on Gibson's last few years, im not really that sold on paying a lot for him honestly.
Gibson for Mrazek, 2nd, conditional 3rd, and a prospect? More if they retain a bit. |
|
|
|
Passsss. The leafs don't have the cap flexibility to be taking on that cap hit and term in an experiment to find out if he's actually dog poop or not.
If the price were to fall into Mrazek + Holl territory, why not. But it won't, not even close. |

I would go as far as Mrazek, Kerfoot and a 2nd round pick for Gibson.. Kinda wish we knew the 10 teams he won't agree to be traded too..

I dont even know if I would give up the 2nd without salary retention in the first place.
I dont know how many teams are truly looking for a goalie like that with a large contract still left. I think the goalie market as a whole is real soft.
Like does Carolina trade Freddie to Anaheim for him and a 3rd? |

I dont think Gibson is a prized ticket around the league. I think the ducks moving the contract is a bigger deal than the return. |

I don't see Carolina doing that.. It's not Andersen's fault they lost to the Rangers.. Andersen was dealing with an injury.. |

If that is the case, I would offer Mrazek and Kerfoot, no draft picks |

Well if such a proposal works, it's because the Ducks cannot wait to get rid of that 6.4M cap hit for the next 5 seasons and they have lost faith in Gibson.
Which brings the question: Why would the Leafs want to acquire it, only in the hope Gibson regains his form.
Sounds like a pretty damn big risk.

Anderson always comes up short or hurt in playoffs…..that’s why he’s not a Leaf anymore. |

I think there’s an open debate as to how much form Gibson still has; maybe more than many believe. Somebody is going to roll the dice on him and he cou’d turn out to be a real difference maker or the next Mrazek.
Either way, that kind of proposal doesn’t likely come close to working. |

So how do teams evaluate goalies based on all the data? I see some articles based on publicly available information. I assume teams have the same raw data but just have different theoretical perspectives that they use as starting points to sort out who they like. Obviously, their defensive strengths and weaknesses are factors. - Canada Cup
Last year I thought about subscribing to Evolving Hockey because supposedly they have some of this type of supporting data - but I've never seen it, which makes me suspect. I suppose one month @ $10 or something wouldn't be a big deal just to see what there is to play with. As a data nerd something like that is like a fidget toy.
Of course work has been a bit nuts lately, so it would be a waste of time right now. Last year we were on an expiring contract, so the work I was doing was mostly maintenance and trouble shooting - easy crap after seven years of familiarity. This year we have 2 new contracts lining up, so it's a lot more chaotic.
This is not a verbatim conversation, but it's close:
"What do you know about Corporate Security?"
"Nothing. I may be the least secure person on the planet. I shouldn't be trusted with gum. For the first 5 years of the internet my password was 'password' and that included my bank password. I still have my PIN written on one of my bank cards."
"Oookaaay. Well, we need you to write the customer facing security response for the contractual bid."
"Did you not hear anything I just said?"
But I digress.
Yes, I do believe there's a bunch of publicly available stats, but I think most of the sites offer it behind a subscription. |

From last blog-
Gibson is near the top of the league in saves from from high danger areas something which is a big issue for the Leafs. - Canada Cup
That in and of itself makes a trade a pretty decent idea. With CAP retention, of course. |

Is Mrazek a total wash out?
Leafs do not need to have to have a spectacular regular season result. They need goaltending that is good enough to keep them in the middle of the pack and set them up for an end of season and playoff run.
Is it possible Mrazek could keep them close enough to gain a solid playoff position? The Leafs could then make a huge play at the deadline for an elite goaltender at $.20 on the dollar against the cap. |
