As these crazy contracts keep getting handed out, it's pretty obvious Hextall and Burke never were really sold on Malkin coming back unless it was at a fraction of what he was worth, almost like the Penguins were throwing Malkin a lifeline. It's even more clear that Malkin knows his worth and wasnt going to stand around and be insulted by all of this.

Im also not as much convinced he is gone. It's one thing to say you want to go to free agency, and its another to actually sign a contract with another team. The question is whether Malkin is frustrated enough that he's written Pittsburgh off unless there is truly no other option for him.

No it’s not. Generational player. The disrespect for Malkin is just astonishing around here.

I wouldn't say generational. Superstar HHOFer, sure.

No one's disrespecting him (well, a few are), but the argument is how much he deserves going forward. For a 25-year-old Malkin, you absolutely pay him $6.7 per. For 36-year-old Malkin who hasn't played close to a full healthy season in 4 years, that's where the dispute comes in.

Also, if you want to call him a generational player, I'd argue that he WAS years ago. Wayne Gretzky was also a generational player, but I don't think he commands a $6.7M per salary at present.

I have a feeling the Rakell signing allows us to trade Kapanen. Unless we are finally going to use him in a PK role and bottom 6 role like he should have been used in the first place.

Also DK isn't the best source. DK was one of the only sources to say we wanted to get Chiarot before he was traded. Unless Marino is gone and the trade is Zucker for Petry with cap retained. I don't see it happening. Which only makes sense if Marino is traded. Again though the source isn't really reliable

Is this a joke?

Geno on the top of his game has always been Top 5 in the league. You don't pay $6.7M for that kind of production.

The more I think about it. The master plan for JR of trading some players (JT Miller included) and signing Malkin to a big contract. Sounds more and more plausible as time moves on. I read LA Kings, Vancouver, Capitals and Lightning (only if they move cap space), and Rangers are interested.

Genos injury history is why you don’t give him term.

You give out term to the Ironmen of the league like Letang, Rust, and Rakell.

I really don’t think Malkin has any plans of playing hockey anywhere but Pittsburgh. It is nice to see all the emotion though guys.

They still need a 3rd line RW so they could see him playing there and moving up with injuries. Don't shoot the messenger.

If you're wondering how this is playing in Pittsburgh, the local FAN sports station had a poll yesterday asking if the Pens were being unfair to Malkin

80% said no they weren't being unfair.

Maybe 6 million dollars to play a really fun game doesn’t seem unfair to most people. It’s not like they wouldn’t give him another year if he’s still a viable nhl option when the fourth year comes. He’s being a baby.

His injury history is the only reason people don't think we are being unfair... which I get the logic in that.

I forget who posted it, but the supposed part of the Malkin deal having incentives for games played to get him up to that 6 million mark is probably what broke this friendship with the organization. Its logical and reasonable from the Pens' side, but also a massive slap in the face to Malkin's camp.

Yeah Malkin is not looking good in this IMO. His team stated his terms, they were offered and rejected. There is no disrespect. Everyone acts like he should be given whatever his demands are and thats silly. Just because hes a future HOF and won the conn smythe doesnt mean he is still that player. Hes a PP guy at this point in his career.
