Problem is Calgary looked like a team that could compete for the cup and JG was a big part of that, do you trade him and chances of the cup or see if you can win the cup?

Easier to say should have traded him

If I were a Flames fan and they traded JG at the deadline this past year I would have been furious The team had as good a chance as any this year to make a run, You cant give up just for the future when you have a solid team. Fringe playoff team maybe, but sometimes you have to bet on yourself. It didn't work for Calgary this year, but I cant fault them for taking the chance knowing well that JG was likely headed east

That would have been a difficult decision, but they only do it knowing he won't sign. All indications were that he would. The lesser fail was not forcing a decision at least a week earlier (or before the draft). His rights would have been worth more than what we got in the end. If that was the case, teams could have had a chance to get in the bidding. As it was, it was down to NJ. CBJ came in at the last second. NYI really didn't offer much. Philly was out.

Calgary should get a top 3 draft pick/player for Tkachuk, I'd rather make a trade with the Ottawas, Arizonas, Anaheims.

The CBA should change to give teams in undesirable markets compensation. I know I'll get push back and it's controversial, but it just sucks to see the odds stacked against your team all the time. Maybe the signing team has to give up a 2nd round pick or 2 or 3. I'd base "undesirable" on years since a team won the cup. I know I'm asking for it by suggesting this.. but man.. it's going to be rough being a Flames fan here pretty soon.

Oh, I think they could make a couple of offers that would be hard to pass up. Kyrou and Parayko perhaps. Or Thomas by himself, but the cap doesn't work this year on that one. Really don't know how much they would value him.

He would like to play with Thomas.
Tarasenko (cap space and because he only has 1 yr so there needs to be more to the deal), Kyrou, Toropchenko and 2023 1st

Any deal with Kyrou needs to come with an extension. The Flames can't do this again next summer. If I'm St. Louis, I'd kind of rather just have Kyrou, especially if it's going to take way more than just him to get Tkachuk.

Not likely. Yzerman had no interest in Gaudreau and i doubt he would in TKachuk either despite his age. Too much money to invest in one player and would make things hard when they need to re-sign Seider, Raymond and others that come off entry level contracts.

Unless he can get Tkachuk for a good price that doesn't involve Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, Cossa, Larkin and probably their 1st in 2023. There is also the problem that Tkachuk could still intend to hit the UFA market as soon as he can even if he got traded so trading a bunch of assets for someone that would still want to leave in like 2 years would be pointless for a team like Detroit which isn't contending for a cup this season and might not next season either.

I also think if the Wings are going to trade for a top end player they still would be better off with a center or a top pair LD. They have plenty of wingers.

I get where you are coming from, but using that logic the Leafs are the most undesirable team. While the jokes from fans would be never ending, we sure would welcome the draft picks every year.

There should a supplemental draft pick awarded as compensation when a player signs with another team. The round of the draft pick depends on the amount a player is signed for. I believe this is how baseball works.

I'd rather go after Tkachuk than PLD. The Montreal-Ottawa rivalry would ramp up significantly.

Unless they have no chance at a cup this year, why would any UFA-bound player ask for a trade to their future long-term team? They can sign anywhere they want in the offseason, and the team they sign with hasn't given up any players/depth in the process. Sucks for their old team, but that's irrelevant if they want to win with their new team.

If Tkachuck is leaving what’s the chance New York moves on him for LaFreniere?

Would NY ?

They probably would. But the cap doesn’t work on that for the Rangers and they’re pretty heavy on the wing as is.

Not that they wouldn’t want to have him or he wouldn’t make them better, but he doesn’t really fill a need for them and they simply couldn’t afford him without a major roster move to pay him.

I think it’s Kane at the deadline for the Rangers

Gaudreau-- American player with a pregnant (American) wife. Do they want the kid to be born in Canada, where Johnny's playing and is close by, or do they want to have a kid who is born in the USA?
Not a surprising decision in the end. $70 million is more money than you'll be able to spend in your lifetime anyway, so turning down $80 million isn't as big a loss as it might seem (unless you're making $50K a year and are looking to amass a fortune that you can brag about).

Tkachuk-- Does he have an American girlfriend and are they considering getting married and having a kid? See above for motivational reasons to sign long term or not.
