Eklund: Leafs and Coyotes Discuss Chychrun Trade. (E4). Nylander?

Toronto will need to anti up. Nylander is on limited term contract. Their 1st round pick will be a late rounder. They have prospects to dangle. The offer may be mega to some eyes but Toronto is a very good team and Arizona holds the cards here.

for Chychryn and a 2023 3rd or 4th

Not sure why Chychryn is so over rated. That would be a massive haul. Once Flames extend Weegar they would be better of with Nylander & a 2nd for Hanafin & they gain almost 2.0 mill in cap space. Both players have 2 years left & would fit in Leafs window.

Nylander is much better player then Chychrun and his contract great. Chychrun is so overrated and Nylander is so underrated, because he’s a leaf, it’s ridiculous. Chychrun doesn’t get you Nylander without an add by phoenix. I’m sure we’ll read lot’s of stupid comments from people that don’t watch hockey but hate the leafs. Chychrun is the Coyotes only option on D and is the main reason he gets the attention. He skates well, great shot, but no defence of awareness and tries to do to much. If Nylander wasn’t a leaf he’d be talked about much differently then he is.

Any other reports we have read say Yotes are only interested in picks and prospects. Something could work if a 3rd team was involved but why would the Bolts have any interest in Nylander when they are in full tanking mode and have no interest in winning any games until the Bedard is taking a regular shift.

Other than the fact that Nylander+ is objectively an overpay...the Yotes don't want Nylander. He's 26, in his prime, and there is zero way he'd sign there when he hits UFA at ~29. He also makes AZ better (marginally) now. AZ wants to stink.

A first and a prospect along with Nylander is really just a salary dump to make the deal for Chychrun work. Why not Kerfoot+picks (1st and 2nd) and prospect (Robertson, rights to Knies, or ???)? Sure, that's a depth hit in the bottom 6 but the Leafs would keep Nylander, get Chychrun, and AZ would get a decent haul. As to the last point, not sure the market for Chychrun is really what AZ thinks it is.

The major difference is contract, not the players. Chychrun is on an incredibly good contract

Yeah that's why I dont think it works with Nylander, something along the lines of Sandin, Robertson/Knies, a 1st with Kerfoot to make the salaries work makes more sense. Other teams could probably offer better deals, the Leafs just don't have any top end blue chip prospects that would be a lock to make the deal work.
