You just posted this week that he was going to get traded though? I’m starting to think you may not actually have inside sources, Eklund!

Canucks don’t have to move anybody out. The contract doesn’t start until next year when $3.65m of dead cap space and bonus overages drop off. Plus another $1m gets added to the cap.

So 24 hours ago the story was that JT Miller sweepstakes were heating up. We are entering the FINAL phase of trade talks. All three NY Metro teams are involved. The story even cited another GM who shared that the Canucks would soon allow Miller to speak to other teams about an extension.

Then 24 hours later we get a massive extension. Normally deals like this take weeks/months of negotiations. Hammering out contract length, cap hits, conditions on no-trade clauses, bonus versus base salary, etc…But I guess in this case the Canucks must have woke up this morning, ceased all trade talks, and quickly hammered out a $56M employment contract by the afternoon. Makes sense.

Everything can be true.

They have been negotiating for months. Saying contracts take months to negotiate is also nonsense or no one would ever be signed on July 1st.

It also could have been a team/player imposed deadline that they were coming up against and the Canucks were getting ready to trade him if he didn't extend. Traded are far more difficult to figure out than an extension.

Earlier today Ek said he was getting traded to NYR, NYI, or NJD. As usual, Ek knows nothing.

Question.. is Lou still lying in the weeds?

If so he should check for ticks. Those little buggers can be anywhere.

This is a mistake by the new Canucks mgmt, which seems to be acting a lot like the old Canuck management. No ambition to go for it all, really build something sustaining, but rather maintain status quo and hope to squeeze into the playoffs, with little cap room or assets yet to build for the future. Miller is great, but 7 & 8mill is too much for a 30 year old (how old he'll be when deal kicks in). The asset management of this organization is just terrible. I was hoping it would be more forward-looking with the new management group, and maybe it will be one day, but this is a deal Benning would/could have made, which is definitely not a compliment or good sign. This team is no closer to winning a Stanley Cup today compared to yesterday. The wait continues...

The GM's of the league must have a pretty clear picture of where the cap is going in the near future. Some of these deals would be very questionable otherwise. All across the league.

Must be especially hard for you knowing that Miller was so close to being traded to one of those Metro NY teams. An actual NHL GM even felt that the Canucks were about to let Miller discuss contract extensions with teams. But then less than 24 hours later he signed a $56M contract.
