Sean Maloughney: Breaking Down Jack Campbell's 21/22 Season - freelancer
My 2 cents. His first 2 months was fuelled by a really lucky streak. They were winning despite their play not being that good. I think it was a big over pay for an old goalie that has never proven he can be a consistent starter.
Oilers will be battling for a wild card this year. |

Curious which metrics you are using to say the Leafs play wasn’t good in the first three months of the season. They were a top 10 team or better in most stats from possession, to scoring and preventing goals. |

Campbell is a gamble. I think everyone knows this, but his play, pedigree, and age... FYI 30 for a goalie is typically prime years... all say it is a good gamble.
Being as unbiased as possible I think he was the best gamble out of the goalie options available this offseason. I think the Leafs have down graded significantly from Campbell in their attempts to replace him. |

There wasn't anyone else easily available but stop acting like he's an upgrade over what the Oilers have been running out for the past few years or that he's the magical final piece to make the Oilers true contenders.

Where did I say he was an upgrade ? Where did I say he was the final piece ?
You seem a little sexually frustrated that you no longer get to admire the grace and skill of Johnny Hockey. You need to get over it, he's in Columbus now.

Smith was so shaky, especially in the playoffs, there is a good chance Campbell will be a significant upgrade for the playoffs. Ditto Koskinen.
Do I expect him to steal us a playoffs, no. But its hard not imagine he has a much better chance of doing so than any goalie the Oilers have had since... Roloson? A long long time ago.
Talbot was solid in 2016 but does not have the pedigree that Campbell has and IMO is the better when both are at their bests.
This last year goaltending almost cost us against a significantly weaker LA kings and was just good enough to handily beat the Flames. It was not an area of strength this year and cost us badly in the previous 2 years.
The goal is a cup and until proven otherwise Campbell is a step in the right direction.
Smith especially, come playoffs for the Oilers, left much to be desired. I think some on here are overestimating his play in Edmonton by only looking at his stats... He rarely won us games with stellar performances and frequently lost them for us even during the reg season.

I remember the Leaf morons on Twitter claiming that Campbell was a Vezina calibre tendy between the shortened season and the start of last season.
Funny how quickly they've changed their tune. Now they're trying to lie to themselves about Matt Murray being better than his number's suggest.
Fickle fanbase that team has. |

If you think he’s best available then give him a one year deal. Don’t gamble five years on a hope and prayer. |

They literally finished second in the division with a much worse goalie. Also he's like, 30. How the (frank) do you call that old |

So you didn't see any of the Leafs' playoff series since Campbell took over?
And you can female dog about Koskinen, but he was probably the best guy to have as a backup/injury replacement last year. Campbell's never started 50 games. |

They didn’t finish second with a much worse goalie. Numbers were pretty equal. The division has also seen significant improvements this off season. Oilers are essentially same team with more question marks on defense. |

There were many better options than paying a 30 year old that has had one meh season as a starter and nothing else. |
