I think so!
Cap is starting to tighten for Sens.
If they need to spend $17m to sign Debrincat and Sanderson (two years out).
They will clear some salary (Zaitsev, Hamonic) but it will be a squeeze to add a big RHD at a top salary.

You forgot to mention Pinto, an actual number one goalie and a couple of bottom six guys that can actually play hockey and provide some depth scoring.
Clearly they need to trade DeBrincat at the deadline.
I've been saying it from the get go. If this city wants to ice a serious Cup contender they can not afford a 9 million dollar winger and I wouldn't sign DeBrincat even for 6 million - not if I want a team that can successfully play big boy hockey in the playoffs. Neither will any other team that is in serious contention for the Cup which is why I've said you won't get much for him at the deadline or in the summer. |

Sanderson will get 5-6million
Pinto 4.5million won’t get more then Batherson
Everyone thinks they gonna get 8/6 😂🤦♂️
I think Zeitsev drops down to bottom pair with Brannstrom and Holden comes out 🤦♂️
Chabot Zub
Sanderson Hamonic
Brannstrom Zeitsev |

We don't know what the number final number will be. But top players will want fair dollars on a long term deal.
Just like Timmy got a little more than Brady, Sanderson will want to nudge ahead of Chabot for his long term deal.

Top Centers always get paid more then wingers which I admit I said he would only get 7.5 his contract was a surprise for me
Sanderson is our number 2 face the facts he will get 5-6 million top 🤷♂️Chabot will still have 4yrs left by time Sanderson gets paid
Pinto won’t get big pay either he will get less then Batherson the only player that’s gonna get paid is Debrincat and that’s if they keep him 🤙
Just my thoughts 😏
Personally I would trade Debrincat and get a good Batherson type of player with same salary around 4.5 then use the leftover cash to bring in a true top 4 shutdown D 😉 |

Good signing on Zub. Would have liked longer term but the Zub camp must know the cap will be much higher and so will be his pay.
I find it interesting that people claiming that Sanderson has been Ottawa's best Dman now feel he will only sign for 5 to 6 million. So desperate to make a DeBrincat signing actually possible. My biggest worry for the team is that this guy gets signed. End of Cup hopes. |

weird people's different takes on Chabbot.
I'm of the mind that this is entirely the coaches fault. The last three seasons of Thomas' regression rather than progression. Over played. A carousel of the worst---not best D partners. My son experienced this in minor hockey. He was the best most trusted D man the coach had. So what happened? He always got the kid who could barely skate as his partner. Safe.
I thought Thomas looked fantastic on the power play last night. I watch all his D zone break downs from the opposite direction of him. WHY is he suddenly finding the puck in his skates----oh...Zaitsev panicked again and zinged it back around to him. Or a winger muffed a perfect pass and it's come back to him again. Over and over this happens. You can't blame him for doing the right thing first---and having another player lose the puck and expect him to save the day. You then can't further blame him for playing safe for three years and watching his offense dry up while he's babysitting for 30 minutes a night. Speaking of 30 minutes a night, that takes it's toll, mentally and physically. The coach and gm have hung this kid out to dry. They've gotten 10 million out of an 8 million dollar D man in the ice time alone.

Definitely needs a better defense structure we all know that and they are definitely over using him
But ya can’t blame the coaches for all his stupid plays with the puck he just throws it anywhere and look another turn over ya can’t blame partners or coaches for his puck plays
Yes I agree he did look good on the PP
Trust me I love Chabot but it’s beginning to be a broken record maybe he just needs Zub back cause he doesn’t trust Zeitsev 🤷♂️ |

Can't wait till this team is bought, GM is fired, Coach is fired, bottom 6 revamped with more size and ferocity and a big ass chad brought in to solidify the top 4. Until then doesn't seem worth watching right now honestly.
This team feels like a lesser version of what the Leafs had at the end of their rebuild.
Small, dependent on top 6 scoring, lacking defense, and on and off goaltending. The only difference being even though we depend on top 6 scoring we don't have guys as good as Mathews and Marner. Heck Batherson might not even be able to play in the NHL soon depending upon how things shake out so that won't help.
I had expected over the last 5 years that the rebuild would be far more defense first and grit focused than the Leafs rebuild not sure how we ended up this meek on the back end. |

Chabot has not looked great at times in the defensive zone. However, both his offensive and defensive games has greatly improved since the coaching staff has been playing him less than 25 minutes most nights for the past month.
Like many things with this team, I'd like to see the team with a new GM and coach. I believe the results would be great. To Dorion's credit, the team has an excellent core and is trending upwards as the core gets older and stronger.

It was interesting listening to Team 1200 this afternoon. Both AJ Jakubec and Lee Versage agreed on something which rarely happens but they did today. They said if teams could have a redo on the 2020 NHL draft, number 1 would most likely be Jake Sanderson and number 2 would be Tim Stutzle! Interesting! The Sens scouts did well, let’s hope Tyler Boucher pans out as a first round pick in 2021. He is doing much better this year! |

There's a clear correlation between Chabot's performance, his ice time, and who he is partnered with. The deal looked great when he signed, now he shows more like a 6.5M. The stats don't lie - manage his time and give him a solid partner and he will play to potential; overplay him and tie him to a boat anchor, and he makes mistakes. The results are on the record and as such I cannot for the life of me understand why it keeps happening. It's good to see the team investing in Zub, at least the front office can read the numbers. |

In a year or two, Sanderson will be the Senators best defenseman so Chabot’s ice time will be cut back which will help him get back to his previous top form.
The problem with the Senators is Pierre Dorion doesn’t want to hire an experienced NHL coach. He likes wannabes that he can control. Dorion’s latest inexperienced coach, DJ Smith has been an absolute disaster. His major focus is on how to save his job. That means, don’t develop the young talent, play the experienced old guys and hope they can save him. Thank goodness the team is being sold, the new owners will want the team to have instant success, to do that DJ and Pierre will be replaced. There is no chance any team would want Dorion as their GM. His forte is scouting so I hope he stays on as the chief scout. |

There was an interesting discussion about shift lengths and how that might affect 5 on 5 play. Ottawa is near the bottom of the league when it comes to 5 on 5 goals. They have twice as many goals scored against as opposed to goals scored for at 5 on 5.
The best teams seem to limit 5 on 5 shift length to about 40 to 45 seconds. The leader in average shift length for Ottawa is DeBrincat at around 1 minute 4 seconds followed closely by Batherson at 1 minute 2 seconds. Tkachuk is at around 54 seconds.
It was suggested that a little more discipline might be in order. |
