Jeremy Laura: Vrana likely done as a Wing, some thoughts before tonight’s tilt

Have a hard time believing a team like Edmonton wouldn't take a flier on Vrana at 50% retained. $2.6m is cheap for what could turn out to be a legit 2nd line scoring threat for them. Would be similar to a buyout after the season.

Really hope this take is wrong. While 2nd chances are rare a buyout makes almost 0 cents. A trade is more likely but the return won't be much this deadline or even during the off-season. Seems like there would be better value in playing Vrana see how next season goes and make decision at next year's deadline. But it's in Stevie's hands.

If Cossa doesn't work out, then it was an even trade. If he does become a legit NHL goalie, then obviously Detroit won the trade.

It’s a sad story. But I think the majority of us trust Yzerman. He wouldn’t dismiss JV if there wasn’t good reason. Maybe the truth will come out some day. My son told me JV deleted all DRW social media posts. I haven’t checked, but if that is the case, my guess is he is waiting for his next train stop to come to fruition, so to speak.

If it's the end in Detroit for Vrana, that sucks. He's one of the best pure goal scorers in the entire league and extremely fun to watch. Whatever happened between him and the team, I hope it's not as irreparable as so many people seem to think it is, because we sure could use a player of his caliber.

I don't think this story is going to end very soon. Vrana has the tools to be a 40-goal scorer in the NHL. The only question is whether he has the will to be that person. I thought that he would be up for a few games before the TDL to see if he had regained his will. It would also serve as a showcase to see if a trade is there. If not before, then after to fill a vacated spot and up his value, if possible, to trade him in the off-season. Whatever becomes of him, I wish him well with whatever demons he needs to exorcise from his life.

This makes no sense this is more than an addiction. What did he do sleep with yzerman wife or teammates girlfriend or wife. No nhl team gets rid of a true goal scorer for an addiction that he is working on.

I think it's too early for everyone to just assume Vrana is done as a Red Wing. Look at how Yzerman handled Jonathan Druin (drama queen and head case that he was). I understand this is a somewhat different situation, but with Vrana on a hot scoring streak in Grand Rapids he's only going to attract more attention around the league and make his value go up. Does anyone think other teams aren't watching Vrana ?
I think Yzerman is smart enough to know this. A buyout makes no sense right now and he's the closest thing the Wings have had in terms of a pure goal scorer in about a decade. Let's see what happens. He may get a call-up if he keeps scoring at his current rate. To assume that Vrana is a complete write-off without all the facts is ridiculous. My guess is that if Yzemman is ready to cut bait with Vrana a trade is the mostly likely scenario.

It feels that way to me too, just passing on information. A buyout doesn’t make any sense at all and everyone who talks about Vrana’s potential is absolutely right. Bridges can be rebuilt, but there’s a lot of this story we don’t know. Yzerman is exceptional at keeping things “in house”. Even if they part ways with Vrana, it’s not going to be a mud fest. If Vrana is indeed heading out, I have to believe that the reasoning is there. As for win/lose/draw on the original deal, there are 2 organizations who have shown some degree of disappointment. That’s just the way sports goes. In the end, Mo and Jake are human beings and I hope the very best for them, whatever that ends up being.

Rumors, like opinions, are like.....well, we all know the rest. None of us even remotely know what's going on.

If we're cutting bait, I'd hope the kid gets a call-up & lights it up.

If we're fishing, I hope whatever happened is resolved.

Either way, I hope the kid finds peace.

100% correct. Unless I hear direct from someone, a lot of smoke and mirrors. An Yzerman deal comes out nowhere and then goes full Batman (Michael Keaton) back into the shadows
