First!
What would a pick in the second five be like compared to the top five this time? I keep hearing how deep the draft class is.
While it would be great to get the top pick, the most important things are getting the culture right, and having a front office that can identify the talent. They are armed with a ton of picks in the first three rounds this year and still a lot next year.
Besides, I heard somewhere that the best the Hawks can hope for is picking fourth. And that the Yotes will pick first. |

Sorry Zach, I am not built that way. I cannot hope that the Hawks lose so that they get a 25% chance of getting a single hockey player no matter how great he is supposed to be. I am actually enjoying watching this ragtag bunch improve, and show that thy belong on a NHL roster, if not in Chicago but elsewhere.

I'm right there with you LA, it was great to see them bully the Bruins and Preds the past couple nights. Loved Josi getting checked almost every time he touched the puck. Turning over the game winning puck was a thing of beauty.
I'm a strong believer that if you try to control your fate you end up only hurting yourself in the long run.

It's not like they can do anything else to make the team "worse". As I mentioned before, Entwistle - Robinson - Hardman was a line that got 10 minutes and they won the game.
Somehow C. Jones is playing better. Murphy (despite somehow always finding a way to get nicked up during games) is settling down a little and they have guys named Tinordi, Zaitsev, and Mitchell to fill out the rest.
You aren't going to be able to remove human nature from players. They've all been told they are poop and will have trouble even finishing NHL games. They all said "bite me, we're going to listen to LR and try as hard as we can". And holy poop, it's working. As LA said, even if they had the worst record that only gets them a 25% chance at 1st.
Let's not be like Powers who female doges and moans that if they done get Bedard, the season is a failure. (frank) that. be happy that we have tolerable hockey to watch. |

Could Murphy's "improvement" be that he is no longer mostly paired with J. Johnson, who analytically was the worst defenseman in the league this year?

It’s a lottery. Yes there are different winning percentages. But would you rather they play like a Colliton team finish last and lose the lottery with maybe the 3rd pick. Our develop players, develop a team identity, have fun and pick 5th. |

Or still have a really decent chance at getting the #1 anyway... |

I mean, he's still not great, but yeah that could be a reason. Johnson has actually been decent with the Avs at lower workload - which is exactly where he should be. |

Yup, Hawks had the 5th best odds to get Kane in 2007. |

It is fools gold thinking that drafting one player even if generational is going to automatically change the trajectory of your team.

Top tier is four and it is an easy debate that at very least the next 8 are gonna be really good to. It does have a number one no other player in the class can aspire to match from their current production, skills, attitude, and abilities. So top tier 1 and top tier 1-B (2-6)
While it would be great to get the top pick, the most important things are getting the culture right, and having a front office that can identify the talent. - 333inthe3rd
The culture is what that newbie adds to, not inspires the already pros.
The top pick gives you an elite scorer and playmaker and it is a loot all top ten teams get a shot at, no matter where we pick, right?
They are armed with a ton of picks in the first three rounds this year and still a lot next year. - 333inthe3rd
Believe me, I know what my evalutions are and where I ranked prospects, but if you were to take all draft prognosticators mock first two rounds, you are gonna find almost
90 names there.
And these are all us guessers not the varied opinion of the NHL draft selection teams who may have OTHERS there too, their dark horse favorites.
It astounds me that we have three other picks in approximately the top 42.
That TB pick between 24 & 32 (if the win the Cup) could be more than a"NHL player" you regularly see come to fruition about here, not usually you have to get lucky.
NOT SO, this time the second two chances may not get a Nazar level speedster with hands, but there is so much I like in the upside and chances to me really excellent Blackhawks of the future; by TB pick in a average draft, you are looking at "guys developing working out...and a pIck of a "Nick Schmaltz" type is what an average draft gives you....you work ion his game, hope he progresses quick enough that you WANT to give him a that better deal b/c he did show it.
This draft that type starts coming up at an astounding end of the second!
(It has to do with Covid, scouting, and the new grades, based on new higher levels of excellence.
Sure that second round and third are somewhat bigger dice rolls because of size, present production.
If you want to start a report card for our GM and his scouting staff, you can base it on the eventual high water marks from THIS years choices.
Besides, I heard somewhere that the best the Hawks can hope for is picking fourth. And that the Yotes will pick first. - 333inthe3rd
I heard we do not know until the lotto balls pop out.
(I saw somewhere that the grade for Eduard Šalé has become a 2nd Rounder...)
Don't agree, but that tells you the strength of the class if you have seen any of Šalé ability and play.... |

It is simply a start. He has to have complimentary linematse that are able to read, react and play.
Bedard can stand alone for 30 goals but help will make him soar.
Think Mike Bossy.

Well looks like our plan is to rebuild through the draft so I don't believe he is automatically going to change much but building a new team around him is better then not This little hot streak will be long forgotten when Bedard is leading the league in scoring . |

I would be mighty happy if Charlie Stramel from U of Wisconsin, nasty tough Finn Kasper Halttunen, Callum Ritchie, Matthew Wood(some here will call him Strome) , Quentin Musty, and goalies Michael Hrabal and Adam Gajan are there with the next three after the FIRST pick. |

Maybe I missed something, how many Stanley Cups has Edmonton won since they drafted the last generational player? |

And if you are the worst team, and the ping pong balls don't go your way which there is a 75% chance that they won't, then what?, you tank every year until the next generational talent arrives?

NO you move on with the rest of your picks try and build a solid core and maybe sign a star player along the way . .But why not be the worst and get double the odds of every other team . instead of a bunch of meaningless wins at the end of a forgettable year |

KD did all he could to assure the Hawks had the worst roster in the league. He can't control how the players play, and the fact they could give a F who the team is going to draft next year.
And I bet if he told LR to sabotage the team, he would quit on the spot, and then you can get a JC type coach to lead them.

Thank you for that detailed response, Wiz. I should have red fonted the last part you quoted, though. Darth likes to say we are destined to pick fourth, and the conspiracy cranks on here think Bettman will give the Yotes the first pick. Until proven otherwise, I assume that it's random, too.
Regarding culture, this appears to be largely LR's doing. Getting a lottery team to put forth that effort night in and night out, that isn't just the players they bring in. This fourth line wouldn't have had any real moments last year, and certainly not under Colliton.
Consider we saw the Oilers draft first four times in six seasons, and they only have a few early exits to show for it. They ended up trading Taylor Hall for a second pair defenseman, and I would guess it was because they either wanted to get rid of him, or he really wanted out. Something has seemed amiss there for some time, aside from not having enough defense and goaltending. Draisaitl had talked about wanting out, also. |

I like it….
Tell him to tank and he quits…
JC rehired to finish off the season, going 0-15-1….
JC fired 5 minutes after the last game of the year.
LR rehired 1 minute later….
Get top three pick and start competing….
That’s a plan…
Exhale…. |

Tell him to tank and good luck getting any players to want to sign with your team, even if you get good.
