Depends on helly trade and contract but he is a much better goalie than anyone we have

Devils luck is we trade for him and he has a career ending injury

Hellebuyck is a great goalie, and would certainly put the Devils over the top. I just have no interest in paying a 31 year old(when the extension starts) over 9M until he's 39. You have my attention if he's just a rental or if he's willing to sign a ~3-4ish year deal though. No idea why he would do that though, as this is likely his last chance to cash in. Guess it depends how much he wants to try to win or if he just wants the bag. Im sure someone will be willing to give him a 6-8 year deal at big money, but it won't be the Devils.

LeBrun also said it himself, "Hellebuyck would need to come down significantly from his ask for the Devils to get more involved." Fitz isn't going to ruin the longterm future outlook of this team.

I’ll miss Wood but I agree, let him walk. Great teammate and funny guy off the rink, but like Josh said, teams have figured out how to neutralize him and he takes too many costly penalties at the worst times.

No point in talking about Helly anymore imo. He’s asking for Vasilevsky money about to turn 31. Hard pass!

Gibby or Hart is what you need. Hart would come at a premium, being from a rival.....Gibby, not so much.
Vanacek, Sharangovich and a 2nd for Gibby ($1.5M retained)

Hard pass on both! Would rather Vanacek and Schmid and at a much better price!

Hell no. Gibson sucks, and Hart would cost way too much to get from a division rival. Just roll with Vanecek/Schmid at sub 5M against the cap.. Literally no issues with that.

I'll let Hellebuyck be the Bobrovsky of another team first. Feels like a lot of people are getting ahead of themselves that we're going to win the cup next year with better goaltending but it often takes multiple deep runs before getting there. Having a goalie decline at the end of that and ruining the window long term isn't the play.

Nothing really new, but Friedman on his pod says that the Devils and Meiers camp are really grinding away at a deal. Also says, "Fitzgerald's quoted, and nobody has disputed that Meier told his agent to do an 8 year deal."

Fitz really wants this done prior to the draft/FA next week. Hopefully it works out that way.

Evolving Hockey's 8 year projection is 8.8M, if Fitz can somehow get him at or under 8.5 that'll be huge considering he already got Bratt under 8(projection was 8.25M). Those little savings will start to add up.

Saw a discussion on NHL network the other night, Kevin Weekes said Timo turned down "a high $9M+ offer for 8 years with SJ." Wondering if this means he has $10M in his head as "his number"?

He certainly could, and thats his right to ask, but he won't be getting that here. The way I've seen people take that is that he just didn't want to be in San Jose anymore, so he was going go turn down anything. He clearly wants to win, and San Jose is pretty far off from being competitive anytime soon. I still think he comes in at 8.75, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if it's in the 9s.

I was thinking 8.75 x 8 as well or maybe up to $9.375 x 8 ($75M), but now think it might be $9.5 x 8 ($76M). Fingers crossed it's under or at $9M and no higher

Do you think the Devils have what it takes to go all the way currently (assuming Timo Meier signs) or are there more pieces you think they need to acquire through trade or free agency? -- @jemgall17

It's too soon to say because the Devils have holes they are going to attempt to fill in the coming days and weeks. Assuming Meier signs, that gives them the opportunity to have Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, Ondrej Palat, Dawson Mercer and Meier in their top-six forward group. But they need to fill out their depth, and potentially one or two of those players moves into a third line role to help that happen. Nathan Bastian, Michael McLeod, Jesper Boqvist and Yegor Sharangovich are restricted free agents. So is Meier, of course, but we're operating under the assumption that he signs. Do they sign them all? Do they package one or two as part of a bigger trade? Erik Haula, Tomas Tatar and Miles Wood can become unrestricted free agents July 1. All three played big roles for the Devils this season. If they leave, they will have to be replaced. But it will be harder with Bratt and Meier on big contracts, potentially taking up $16 million or more on the cap.

The Devils have to address the defense. Luke Hughes should be in line to be a top-six defenseman out of training camp. Can Simon Nemec do the same? Will they re-sign Ryan Graves or let him go to unrestricted free agency? My guess is the latter. Severson is gone, a pill easier to swallow with Hughes on board and Nemec potentially too. But there is some work to do on the back end. The good news is the Devils do not have to be in the market for a game-changing forward or defensemen. They have those. They're in the market to add depth, to make sure they have a go-to third line, fourth line and third defense pair.

It appears it'll be Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid or Mackenzie Blackwood in goal. Blackwood might be traded if the Devils can find the right deal. They can win with Vanecek and Schmid if they insulate their goalies, similar to how the Vegas Golden Knights won with Adin Hill. It can be done, but I have to see what pieces the Devils add in the coming days and weeks before I can say they're ready to take the next step, which is to become legitimate Stanley Cup contenders.

I mean, the guy could've just said that the Devils wouldn't be a cup favorite next year because of questions in goal, having two rookies on defense, then needing to fill out the bottom six with low cap players. Then maybe in 2-3 years when the cap increases and the core matures with more playoff experience they'll be able to move all in and go for it. But what do I know.

They should be all in now. Their window has opened. For how long? That depends on how Fitz keeps doing with these contracts. You can argue the next 4 years(Nicos contract) or 7 years(Jacks contract). That's their window right now, but that can definitely be shortened if Fitz gets stupid with some moves over the next year or two.

If all of their in-house deals get done at projection(with Wood/Graves/Tatar/Blackwood and one of Shara/Boqvist leaving), they'll have ~10-11M to play with and add from the outside. Thats plenty of space to still add an impact player up front, along with depth.

I don't disagree with any of that but the playoffs is more and more about getting lucky with your goaltender. I don't know if Vanecek/Schmid are the guys for that because I don't think anybody could ever know.

I think having a really good 3rd line is also important for the playoffs and I'd like to see Haula re-signed and really cemented in that role rather than on Jack's wing to give us that depth.
