When it comes to compensation though...the other 3 teams EK has spoken to have better assets to deal...except maybe any potential picks involved. Have to think the Pens picks have best chance of being the highest picks between Pens, Canes, Leafs and Kraken.

WRT trading players in their high contract post UFA years, the market value has already been reflected in salary. The team that signed them paid (presumably) the *most* any team was willing to offer. This high bid is usually an overpayment, known as the winner's curse.
The thought that such a player can be just moved for assets ignores this reality.

Obviously circumstances can change, but the general rule should be any player signed to a UFA contract who has not significantly outplayed the payout will cost resources to unload.

Karlsson shouldnt go for anything special/significant. That's why the Penguins should have a good chance to get Karlsson and one of the reasons why I said they should be in on him. We dont have any significant prospects to give up nor should any team have to.

My Karlsson trade is relatively simple:

Karlsson
40% retained

for

Petry
2024 Protected 1st
Mid-level prospect
2025 conditional pick (3rd round pick that could become a 1st or 2nd if the penguins reach the Finals or Karlsson wins another Norris)

Since SJ is retaining 40%, for the 4 years, you may need to sweeten it a little more, but that should be the basic framework.

Grier getting rid of Karlsson would be a huge win for him. 2 years ago, SJ wouldnt have been able to give EK away without absorbing 50% and giving up assets to dump him.

Once you sign DOC, you use the buyout window to buyout Granlund.

Does Petry, with his NMC, agree with going to San Jose?

So Bergeron is officially retiring...sucks for the B's...he still has a lot to give, last season really proved that.

Oh damn he did too. I honestly thought he would play another year then calling it a career after that, but either way what a solid player he is.

If Grier wants to jump start this rebuild, Couture and Hertl should be shopped as well. Couture at his age and contract won’t get a lot in return, and he’ll definitely have to retain money on him as well. Even Hertl has never been a ppg player and he’s making $8 mil for the next 7 years. With a poop team, I don’t expect his numbers to get any better.

Grier has his hands full with this team and a rebuild. The sooner he moves these bigger named players, the sooner their rebuild is over.

IF Guentzel resigns, at least the pens have guys like Guentzel, Rust, Graves and Rakell they can trade in a few years. Rust and Rakell will be at the tail end of their contracts and pens would have no problems retaining half of Rust and Rakell’s salary for a better deal.

hahaha that's an opinion. However, that it sucks for the B's is a fact. He was awesome for them last season.

Petry has a modified NMC so he can submit a 15 no trade list. When he was traded here, the story was he wanted to be in the USA. I dont think there was specific conditions on what US market/area he wanted to be in. So on his 15 team list, the 7 Canadian teams would be there. Who the other 8 would be could be anyone.

I think he would be okay with San Jose. He doesnt strike me as a guy trying to win it all and get a Cup.

He doesnt strike me as any kind of guy other than one that probably doesn't want to play in Canada again. With no cups would he rather go to a bottom feeder or a place with at least a chance? I dont see why he wouldnt want a least a chance at glory haha.

A deal would probably be easier to achieve by the Sharks if Karlsson was 10 years younger.

But at 33 yrs old and a huge cap hit this is a tough sell.

I think this was more like a tongue and cheek comment/joke. SuperHendy didnt literally say that but he did propose quite a lot of pieces, including a 1st and conditional pick that could be a 1st, for what the general consensus around the league is a cap dump.

Having said all of that, I think in some of the too-many-to-count EK blogs the past month, or so, there has been proposals in the comments with two 1sts in it haha.
