Habs got rid of Hoffman (a completely worthless player) and Pitlick (guy that can't crack the lineup) in exchange for Petry with a reduced salary that, especially if they keep another % of his now reduced salary, should have alot more value on the market than Hoffman ever could.
They also got DeSmith who will end up either getting traded or act as an insurance for depth at the position if Primeau (or DeSmith himself) get picked off waivers when the Habs begin the season with Montembault and Allen as goaltenders.
Oh and we got a 2nd rounder to boot!
It's a trade where we gave up nothing of value and got something decent that should bring even more down the line. |

What about the money?
Hoffman had a year left, Petry has two.. |

Yes but Petry won't be staying. At least not the whole two years.
Habs still have around 5-6M of cap space after the trade and can eat part of Petry's salary if they need to.

A Hoffman buyout would have been less complicated, no?

I think Scabeh lays it out rather well. What also be a factor is we opened up an important forward position for youth. Now Pitlick also is factored into another position, but more of a press box presence if anything.
Hoffman had a year on a $4.5m salary with Pitlick's mere $1.1m. Petry has two years but as a RD, where we lack experience i feel was a great move. So financially we basically stayed status quo until DeSmith and/or Petry go.
I would like to see DeSmith move, we'll get a late pick for him, and keep Petry until the trade deadline where his value, unless injured or craps the bed completely, is best. We should be able to get a first for him. Especially if we keep some of his pay for the next two years.
I see this a a win win. What I'm worried about are the fools in the stands giving Petry a hard time when/if he hits the ice under CH logo. Not saying he's not deserving, but habs fans can be the worst. |

Less complicated, certainly.
But a Hoffman buyout wouldn't have given us any assets in return.
A Petry at 2.3M (if we retain maximum salary for two years) could/should bring back something decent. I know he's not your favorite but he's a RHD that can play around 20 min. That's worth something.

I agree with all that Scabeh and you said. Gotta trade Petry or he's 100% going to be a distraction

Keep Monty as your starter, then trade any one of the remaining three.....
Taking Petry back in exchange for losing Hoffman and Pitlick is genius..... |

Habs took on money to help the Pens, got a 2nd round pick, a prospect, Petry (at 75% of salary) and DeSmith. They also got rid of Hoffman and Pitlick to open forward slots for for younger players, without eating any contract money.
Now they have a glut on defence and goal, that needs to be addressed.
Pens could not trade Petry to the Sharks directly, as speculation that team was on his no trade list, so they needed a 3rd team. Guess Petry never aded Montreal to his list, as he figured he would never get traded back there.
HuGo pounced.
The Habs did pretty good, getting better/more valuable assets to trade. Petry and DeSmith likely flipped before the start of the season for more assets at some point (I know losing Petry a second time will really crush your heart beyond words, Pete).

You get a 2nd now, plus whatever you can get for Petry and deSmith, likely at least another 2nd in there somewhere.
And you did not have to buy out anyone... not sure they could at this point anyways, the windows are closed. |

So, 2 things.
He could mentor the young d if he stays, or get a decent return at yet another reduced salary.
Got it.

I think the Habs could get a prospect or 2nd round pick if they trade Petry and retain another 50% salary. That would bring his cap hit at 2.35M, he becomes attractive for some teams at that point. One challenge though is his 15 teams no trade list as we discussed yesterday.
Still a great gamble by HuGo....and they already got a 2nd for the 2025 draft. |
