Trevor Neufeld: Seven Reasons to be Positive About the 2023-2024 Calgary Flames - Trevor_Neufeld_
Good job as always Trevor.
There are two things I would like to see happen before the first puck is dropped next season.
For those players who really don't want to play in Calgary. Accommodate their wishes.
Secondly, that ownership, upper management and coaching staff get on the same page with regard to maximizing the resources we have.
It was obvious last year that Treliving and Sutter were at odds with one another and, on a positive note, I think the Huska-Conroy relationship, will be a breath of fresh air.

Thanks Trevor.
A great way to start the morning is with a strong coffee and a TN Flames blog.
I recall reading somewhere that The Bruins called Calgary about obtaining DH only after Chia (whom had just left Boston for Edmonton) called and threatened to offer sheet Hamilton. It was the Bruins way of saying FU to Chia. But I cannot confirm this as being true. Not all Hockey sites live up to the high journalistic standards of Hockeybuzz.
You make some great points about the team. They willl be younger and faster. Glad to see Conroy waiting out this poopty market for a deal that helps the Flames. |

Cheers, guys! Fall is creeping up and that means I’ll have time to ramp up production. Not to mention actual games to cover. This is going to be a fun season with the younger players getting more consideration.

Whether it’s Playfair chewing his nails up on the bench or Brent Sutter/Brad Treliving getting the silent treatment, you can always sense it with Darryl. Doesn’t help that both Sutter and Treliving are more the solo chef type.

Thought I read that too. Edmonton really should consider re-hiring that guy. |

Calgary potentially has 3 high end prospects coming into the season in Pelletier, Coronato and Wolf. That'll be fun to watch instead of 35 year old depth players, who are there because they know Sutter hockey. They might lose but it'll be more entertaining. |

Awesome Trevor that was worth the wait!
As far as captains go my thoughts are:
Backs gets the C (conditional to signing a 2 year extention at a club friendly #).
Ras & Weegs get the A's.
In consideration for letters - Coleman and Lindy (conditional to him signing an extention).

It's too early to guess how Huska's going to use his goalies, and the AHL data is pretty much useless. The NHL is winning at all costs. In the AHL, it's more important to get players ready for the NHL and the team still wanted Gilles to be a thing when Huska was coaching. If Markstrom is back to Vezina Markstrom and Vladar is still a sub-900 goalie, expect to see Markstrom playing 60+ again.
I also think the deadline to trade Hanifin is about a month from now. The Flames are likely to be solidly in a playoff spot and probably fighting for the division in February. If that's the case, they're not trading Hanifin unless the trade somehow makes them better.

People's expectations for Coronato are way too high. I haven't seen him play all that much, but his college numbers really don't suggest he's ready for NHL hockey. He didn't dominate last year and the leap from college to the NHL is massive. He probably needs a year in the AHL as a top-line guy. I also doubt we'll see much Wolf this year either unless there are injuries or Vladar is awful.

That's why we call them prospects. They may or may not make the team this year. Never the less, it will be interesting to watch them and they all have good potential. |

The most important part to this years flames is that young guys will get a fair shake unlike what they had under Sutter. I would way rather watch the flames finish last by giving young’s guys a chance than by having rancid old veterans that used to know how to play and finish just shy of playoffs. And wolf will play at least 10 games this year he’s earned that much with his play the last 2 seasons. |

Well said.
Sutter's treatment of Matthew Phillips was nothing short of disgraceful, and a prime example of mismanagement of talent.
You don't put up his kind of numbers in the AHL for that length of time without special talent, no matter how small you are.
The kid paid his dues and deserved a fairer shot to unseat one of those low skilled "rancid old veterans."
I really hope he lights it up in Washington. |

I agree on Phillips, but I did watch all the Wrangler playoffs and he was pretty ordinary when the checking picked up. I’m more pissed that we lost 34 point Jusso Valimaki in order to protect Rooney. That was a slap in the yaa yaas. |

Think the protected Stone and Mackey too..both are gone now. That was such a bad decision. |

Sounded extremely toxic with Sutter on many levels. Hubs and Kadri will have a lot to prove. I am expecting big years out of them.
What Sutter did to Phillips was cruel. poopty thing to do to anyone, let alone a hometown kid that played his heart out for the minor team. |

I watched the Spitting Chicklets interview, it wasn’t that bad. He told more stories about his relationship in LA.
Quite funny actually. |

Yeah, he seemed to speak mostly fondly of his working relationship.
The interview came out this week, but was recorded prior to the Devils trading for him. Wonder if he would give different answers now that he’s out of the organization. |
