I heard a while ago that Bert and tree wanted long term deals, but weren't able to.
So the plan was to see how Bert fit in and possibly extend him mid season.

I think the perception in the league right now is Toronto is a great place to go bet on yourself - play a year or two at a reduced salary, put up big numbers playing with superstars under the media glare at the Centre of the Hockey Universe, and then go cash in.

Or put it more succinctly, Bertuzzi may just be hoping for the Jack Campbell effect.
