Just because Markstrom has a NMC doesn't mean he wouldn't waive it to go from Calgary - who have some hope of making the playoffs - to Buffalo, who are essentially already eliminated. It could happen.
I think before Calgary makes a big trade, their next news will be extending Noah Hanifin. Just a hunch...

Ya thats what I was thinking. Make some cap space to resign Hanifin
Something is probably happening because he had the same tweet a little while later about Merzlikins and then one of the CBJ beat reporters tweeted that the Jackets and him mutually agreed to work on a trade.

He has 2 more years left & knows Flames have no choice to move on from at least 2/3 of the UFA's & go youth. Dont see a contender in Calgary for at least a few years & im sure Markstrom wants a playoff team for the next few years. I think Carolina or Jersey are probably the destinations.

He’s played really well this year, upping his value. I think the only way Conroy trades him is if the return is too good to be true. Devils have reportedly been linked to him earlier, so that wouldn’t be a surprise. Hurricanes have no luck with goalies this year, so you might be on to something. Toronto could use a starter and Treliving is there.
Flames probably need to sign Hanifin before they start disassembling the team.
Sabres have a "good enough for now" goalie to send back, Ukko Pekka Luukkonen, and a boatload of mid-level young prospects to send. - Blockhead
Flame really don’t need a goalie back, they’ve got Wolf in the minors that needs a spot. Sabres have lots of interesting prospects though, just don’t see Marky waiving to go there. Maybe if his buddy Lindholm was part of the deal, he might be persuaded.

It's almost as if following Kevin Weeke's twitter is like a source? If someone hinted to me that Markstrom was on the move...I'd probably suggest contenders like Carolina or New Jersey are the most likely trade partners. Both could use Markstrom for the next 3 years. And Markstrom may waive to go there. We also know Conroy has already structured a trade with New Jersey in the past so there is a good working relationship in place.
Not sure how Buffalo makes any sense. But it's already an E4 so must be something happening with Buffalo and Markstrom...
My sources are telling me Markstrom would love to play in Buffalo under Don Granato. He's never belonged to a country club like the one Granato is running and feels the veteran leadership makes hockey fun and relaxing again. E4 and EZ
Flames are not eating salary to get rid of him..he's been their best player. He'd be a major upgrade to NJ, Carolina etc.. it will cost them assets. - tincup

I’m just not sure how many assets these teams will be open to giving up for an aging goalie who’s been performing at a very average level, and has a pretty significant price tag for a few more years
