There are a ton of options that fit the Giroux trade mold:
EDM - Broberg, 2024 1st, 2025 3rd.
LAK - Kaliyev/Turcotte, 2024 1st, 2024 4th.
VAN - Hoglander, 2025 1st, 2024 3rd/4th*
DAL - Bourque, 2024 1st, 2025 3rd/4th*
CAR - Drury, 2024 1st, 2024 4th.
TOR - Robertson, 2024 1st.
NJD - Mercer, 2024 1st.
NYR - Kakko, 2024 1st.
Bolds are my favorites (whether the other team would do them I dont know). TB, COL, LVK would all probably be interested but not sure the prospects they could offer.
Picks are a gamble but worst case scenario they are a shot at something and best case they can be used to bring in an impact player in the offseason. Both would be better than risking Jake walk for nothing.

I'm totally fine trading him as long as they get a nice return. That can be young players or picks, but like you say they have to hit. I question if FSG is going to authorize a teardown.
I think they sign him and effectively kick this can down the road for better or worse. If they keep him, my strategy would be:
*Give him a raise. His present salary + Carter's salary + an increasing cap would allow you to get in the 10-12M Dollar Range/Year EASILY
*Give him term if that is what he needs.
*DO NOT BUDGE ON A NO TRADE CLAUSE
It would seem like a win/win for all parties. Jake gets paid. If they still are going to try to roll with this core, they can hold Jake as long as needed. When they decide to tear down, Jake may still be an asset that could fetch a return - even at that salary & on a long term. Even if he is not there is always a team looking to get to the floor. Or maybe even the new CBA will allow for a buyout. In the worst case scenario, it goes splat and you can't move Jake, the contract is likely expiring within the first year or two of the next up cycle anyways. |

Think it all depends on Sidney. If he wants Guentzel they will sign him. If Sid is unwilling to sign an extension Guentzel will be traded. Cant see them trading Guentzel if Sid is committed to retiring a Penquin. Nothing they get will help the next 3 or 4 yrs. |

None of these are feasible because every team needs to move salary to acquire Gentz and Trono and NJ has LTIR but needs to use it on defense or in goal. |

I really can’t blame Guentzel for not hitching his wagon to this horse. But it will bring something fun new and perhaps even better. God luck Jake! |

I think the Claude Giroux deal sets up the frame work for a deal. I feel it is a sellers market and prices are high. I think the original rumored roster player (for cap reasons), top prospect and 1st. I believe if Jake did become available there would be a bidding war. Multiple newspapers in Edmonton have them saving their 1st and top prospects in hopes to win a bidding war for Jake.
I've heard deals with Kane, Foegele, or Ceci (l assume he wouldn't be coming back to Pittsburgh, but he was still mentioned in a rumor) Lavoie, Bourgault, or Broberg all being mentioned in different rumors from Edmonton papers and rumor sites.
The most common rumor is Foegele, Bourgault, Broberg and a 1st for Guentzel with 50% retained.
Personally I could see Edmonton and us doing a trade, but I think Nedeljkovic and a pick would be included as well with maybe a 2nd also coming back.
I could see Vancouver going heavy after Guentzel as well though. Especially with the connection with their coaching staff and front office.

Pens retain half, problem solved on all accounts. |

If Jake doesn't want to stay (or if he'll stay but his price is 12 million or something stupid) then it's on Dubas to move him, get future assets (Maybe a current asset to make salary work who's decent) and retool the lineup this offseason
Even paying Jake 10 million, what does this roster look like in 2024/25?
Pretty much the same, with the same results, minus Carter
Maybe Sid has to get used to playing with 2 of Smith/Rakell/Rust, and the Prospect and the $$ savings can be reallocated to filling out Malkin's line and depth on the 3rd line

Letting Jake go and dumping Smith would give Dubas $22M+ to work with in the off-season. Interested to see how he’d allocate that money and what other moves he’d make. |

Gimme Lafreniere, Cuylle and a 1st OR Perreault for Guentzel 50% retained and I’ll send the paperwork to the league tonight! |

It is time to tank like they did with Drafting Mario Trade Trade Trade for picks and prospects If not this team will look the same for the next 3 or 4 years or like the team of the last 3 or 4 years Do not wait too long A number of teams keep their players too long and risk a new generation of players Time to pull the trigger sooner rather than later |

The solution is easy:
- Trade Crosby
- Extend Guentzel
- ???
- win |

Just a thought on the PP. Do they have too much talent?
In other words, are they trying to be too fancy for their own good (kinda like Dream Theater) instead of just running a conventional power play and just crashing the net (kinda like Motorhead)? I'm not saying put your 4th liners out, but maybe take what you're given as opposed to trying to make the perfect play. |

33 games left boys and girls...66 possible standings points still on the line...they are 12th in the East in the middle of February.....the exact same place they were in February of 2009 and 2016....now, do I think this season will end with a cup as well? no, I do not haha...however....they have shown me they are capable of high quality hockey...even in a lot of their loses this season...
...As someone who wasn't really confident they would make the playoffs before this season started or at any time during it, thinking it was a toss up, that it could go either way, I haven't given up on this regular season, yet...its a tall hill to climb but a climbable one, for sure. |
