Cant see any team taking on that 5M contract. Likely will have to retain 1.5 to 2M

$5mil is so bang average for a second line winger. There is no reason we’d have to retain since a team is incurring zero risk since he’s expiring and likely banking on the contract season effect. Only way this gets hard is if Smith goes out of his way to (frank) us with the no trade list.

He isnt a 2nd line winger..3rd line player on a good team. 5M for what he brings is too much $$

From my perspective, diminution of Reilly's no-trade list won't simplify attempts to purge his contract. Competitors aren't seeking diminished third line wingers. Reilly's age, decline, and cumbersome AAV, will certainly dissuade most GM's. I'm not sure a beneficial trade can be found. $5 million punishing in this case.

40-50 points is second line winger point production. He's a 2nd line winger.

Unless you’re getting a top six winger in return I wouldn’t trade him. Lots of players go through a slump after being traded. On top of that he had a summer of cup parties. I like his all around game, he should have been on Crosby’s line instead of hiding Drew O Connor.

40 to 50 pts guy on 2nd line is a poor 2nd line player. Not on a good team unless he is a developing young player

After he visited the White House he came back with a case of Bidenomics and it was a severe illness that lasted the entire season Got less for more That is surely a disease nobody wants It too is contagious Pretty much infected the bottom six all season long Sid must have gotten a shot to prevent him from getting it DC is a dangerous place

He put up 40 points which was by playing pretty poorly. Depending on who is on his 8 team list I’d focus on the crappiest teams in the league who also have the most cap space. If he has a bounce back year playing in the top 6 in Utah, cbus, Ottawa, Buffalo, they can trade him to a contender (or Vegas) 50% retained for picks/prospects. Seems to me like a smith - laine trade would be a slam dunk.

They won't need to retain. If Pierre Luc Dubois can be traded, so can Smith. Someone would take a chance on him at only 1 year left on his contract.

Your garbage team got out of a poop contract for free. Trading Smith will be easy. Congrats on wasting another generational goalies career.

Smith will be an easy trade. Is a team going to want to take a 5 year gamble on Domi or Bertuzzi or trade a mid pick for Smith? It will be Smith all day.

I actually think there is a mid to high level chance the Pens retain cap space, but it will be to achieve a higher return value in a trade. Hell, the way Tampa rolls, they would probably give us their 2026 1st for Smith 1/2 retained.

Robertson on the Leafs is a guy I'd love to get. Leafs have held back his development in prioritizing gritty vets. Smith 1/2 retained and a Poulin or even Ponomorov. Something like that is what I would expect Dubas to try to pull off.

Smith for Laine would be great. If I were to guess he will block Columbus, Winnipeg, Calgary, San Jose, Minnesota, NY Islanders, Buffalo & Montreal unless he gets a sign and trade in place with one of them.

I am of the opinion that the Pens should keep him. He under-performed last season and this is a contract year for him. While he definitely won't be playing for the Pens in the 2025-26 season if he wants to be playing for anyone at a decent salary by then he better put up a good season for the Pens this coming season. I get that he didn't like leaving Vegas for Pittsburgh. That is the business of the game, get over it .
