Ty Yorkie doing a fantastic job 👍🏻

$2.49m cap space allows Poolman to go to LTIR after season starts. Can then accrue LTIR bonus cap. Simply paper a player down & VOILA. Cap mess is fully unentangled. PA is having himself a great offseason.

Woops yup forgot to touch on the cap, but yes it should be fine and easy going forward. Allvin has always hated working out of LTIR as they can't accrue over the season, so looks like he's setting himself up to do that now

Thanks NYN for the summary.

While we can lament big names that chose to go elsewhere the Canucks plan B may be better long term.

More importantly, how are the Canucks set up against their division now?

Oilers made strides adding scoring wingers. So they will be a threat and have Cup hunger. Kings seem to be a mess. Betted it all on Keumper. Krak will they be back? Don’t see how they solved their PP and scoring. Maybe Montour helps but not enough to make Chandler a scoring machine lol. Vegas well they lost key guys and are not better. But still can circumvent cap by TDL. Flames will join Sharks and Ducks as lotto candidates.

So Canucks look good with their adds to keep contending. Is it enough to get past the Oilers?

With the Canucks' new D signings, they may need to take a flyer on a reclamation project:

Hughes - Hronek
Soucy - Myers
Forbort - Desharnais

Out of those bottom 4, they only have Myers as a competent puck mover. Might they circle back to someone who can effectively move the puck outside the top pairing? Pierre-Olivier Joseph and Adam Boqvist are still there, as well as an older Ryan Murray.

Good with Boqvist. Though will he choose to come here? Don’t see RT playing any of them above what he has on hand.

They may improve from within. Willander might be ready to make the jump before end of season.

I’d give Boqvist a try but stand pat is ok also. Be nice if Hronek could carry his own pair. The PK has gotten help & imo the biggest fix.

Willander could join late when the NCAA wraps up. His team could go far though, rumour is he’s top pairing now.

What about Tyson Barrie on a cheap 1yr deal as a 7th D man?

It’s more about who can play with QH if you split them up. Soucy Hronek would be just fine. Then what? It just seems diminishing returns if Norris QH doesn’t have a partner that raises him.

I doubt he goes low enough. Someone will pay him more.

I heard some reporting Canucks coaching staff really like Desharnais. They like how he can skate. They think they can make him more effective.

That 3rd pair just needs to win the puck dish to a low hanging forward to move it out.

I don’t believe Hronek raises QH as much as some ppl think. Imo Hronek is a #3D ideally. That said no other RHD is suitable.

Some interesting tidbits from Drance:

1. Jake DeBrusk appears to have been the Canucks’ top target

The Canucks never attempted to trade for Jake Guentzel’s signing rights.

While Canucks brass loves the player and would’ve found a way to make it work if Guentzel had made it to free agency, and been open to coming out West, the club was concerned with how adding a $9-$10 million cap hit to the books might impact the team’s balance. All along they preferred the younger, more affordable option of Jake DeBrusk to punch up their top-six forward group.

Obviously the Canucks kept a tight lid on information surrounding their intentions in free agency, to the point of breaking nearly all of their own signings themselves, but multiple team sources indicated to The Athletic once the dust settled on Monday that one of the reasons Vancouver didn’t try to trade for Guentzel’s rights is that DeBrusk was their primary top-six forward target all along.

...

5. High hopes for Kiefer Sherwood

Kiefer Sherwood obviously impressed the Canucks with his performance in their first-round series against the Nashville Predators. Or, at least, he impressed those Canucks not named Hughes:

Sherwood is tabbed as the Sam Lafferty replacement. He might be a smaller body, but the club wanted to bring in a fourth-line presence with a nastier game, a bottom-six winger who played to their identity on a more consistent basis than Lafferty managed last season.

Canucks hockey operations think more highly of Sherwood than that, however, even if they’d be deeply reluctant to say so publicly. This is more a storyline for training camp and in season, but there’s a school of thought that with Sherwood’s speed and willingness to mix it up, it may be worth seeing whether Sherwood is capable of effectively complementing Pettersson in a second-line role at some point this season.

If that seems like several bridges too far, and it’s certainly a high upside bet, it’s not entirely outside the realm of possibility. Over the past two seasons, Sherwood has scored 0.83 goals per hour at five-on-five, which is a credible top-six rate, and comparable to what players like Frank Vatrano and Alexis Lafrenière have managed over the time period (albeit in far more ice time). Throw in Sherwood’s robust American League scoring profile, and there’s a remote but legitimate shot that he has the chops to play higher up the lineup than Canucks fans currently imagine.

Boqvist or another reclamation project. Create competition at camp.

I'd love for the Canucks to take a flyer on Yamamoto or Zadina and see if they can't rehabilitate them into potential top 6/middle 6 options.

Wow that’s quite the sleight of hand on what plan A was for them. Power forward that can score is a RT special.

I guess that included Zadarov and Lindy at some point. The market was too crazy high to include them though.

So value deals with upside; it is, for where the coaching staff will cook it up.

Not RT types. You see they got an established identity now.

Still need more offense, it dries up come playoff time, DeBrusk SHOULD provide around 25-30 goals playing with Petey, but I'm not sold on Hoggie and I'd like to replace him with someone more offensively gifted for one or two years before Likker is ready to take over.

What the F happened to Zadina? According to Red Wing fans, this kid was supposed to be the next Datysuk. I'm glad they didn't pick Norris Defencemen Huges

DeBrusk is a proven playoff producer. The other two seem they can produce in the RT system the way they play. You have to remember Kuzmenko types don’t make it for RT.
