Don't be fooled by the three cups, Stan Bowman was not a good GM and he is responsible for how dreadful the Hawks are now.

He basically wound up with nothing after trading Panarin, got nothing for Raanta, Leddy, Teravainen, Saad 2x, Byfuglien, Sharp, Danault, and Jokiharju. He also had some of the worst contracts ever in Seabrook and more recently Seth Jones. He had zero ability to work he cap.

He inherited a dynasty caliber team and eventually turned it into rubble.

“significant strides in personal improvement by participating in myriad programs”. Nice boilerplate.

I think it's unfair to say Bowman wasn't good at managing the assets he inherited. However, he utterly sucked with loyalty to veterans at the expense of youth. Definitely killed CHI competitive window way faster than should have happened and kept them in mediocrity for way too long before rebuilding. EDM had a good offseason, no reason to think they needed Bowman.

It was Dale Tallon's team, he was just fortunate to be around when it all clicked.

Bowman will spend a few weeks getting acclimated. Then by early September he will announce the Draisaitl extension, which has already been agreed to in principle but Jackson left that for the new GM to stamp. Ek has reported things might be going sideways and Draisaitl wants out. 100% false per my source with the Oilers. Leon needed a rest. He took a trip. Got engaged. Attending McDavid's wedding. He said let's just finalize this before training camp so you guys can focus on other needs - Henrique, Skinner, Brown, Arvidsson, etc...But they will spin this as "Bowman's" signing. Take that to the bank Ek.

So Leon got engaged, hey? That’s good info. I’ve been here so long I remember when McDavid got married it didnt get a mention here. Progress.

Not fortunate, orchestrated. When Stan was promoted, the Free agents had been signed, draft done, contracts done. Stan sat in the suite with his father and watched the team that Tallon built win the cup.

They should just finish the job. They should do what it seems hockey guru Scotty Bowman has in mind, which I believe is to get rid of Tallon, promote his son, Stan, the Hawks assistant GM, and then everybody will take orders from Scotty. This is what seems to be happening anyway, so why not admit it and get on with it?

Yeah...except for the dynasty part given PIT hadn't won a single playoff round in half a decade, missed the playoffs the year before, and their core three were 36 years of age or older when Dubas was hired. But ignoring those monumental differences and sure it's the same thing.

You think Holland was bad bowman is twice as bad and should not be in the league. Bowman was a horrible gm and leave it at that.

Dubas is keeping 2 records though in the books...Softest team in the league. NO other team can match that. And keeping a below average coach.

Penguins won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the league's softest team. That's not their problem. Lack of talent from age decline and a weak prospect pool is. Full rebuild is needed.

I wonder how much it really matters. Holland's reputation was in the dumper by the time Edmonton hired him with most people being of the opinion that he wasn't able to function in the cap era. Then he made brilliant moves like giving nurse 9.25 million and whatever TF he gave Campbell and still came within a 1-goal Game 7 loss of getting his name on the Cup again. Lately I'm of the opinion that McDavid will likely eventually win the Cup - though it could be in a season when no one expects him to a la Ovechkin - and it really won't matter who the GM is nor who Edomonton's latest one season wonder coach is.
