Friedman has said GMs discuss trade packages first before going to players for waiving clauses. Makes sense to not potentially alienate your player without having an acceptable trade package first.

The initial conversations, absolutely. But the way Trouba found out was on social media by an “insider”. At that point they were deep in it and if you have a player that can kill the deal you need to make sure you get to them before the internet does. This one had (if I understand correctly) a lot of pieces that they hammered out.

On the flip side, there’s a semi viral video of a baseball player pulled off the field in the middle of play, finding out he was traded. We’ve seen players leave the ice (rarely) but those no trade protections have to be discussed before you get too far in. “Would you be willing to go” or “give me a list” which isn’t uncommon to ask for before starting negotiations either. In this case, Trouba knew exactly what he needed to do to shut down the deal.

I made a correction to the “broadcast buzz” portion. A respected reader reached out and there were no listings for the NHL on USA. Thanks to the reader for that.

I’d had some pushback on the Chicago region as Diamond Sports (previously Bally) lost those rights to a different RSN. The broadcasts were on NBC sports but the lawsuit and separation clearly stated the footage was provided by Diamond. No idea how or why they used NBC instead of an ABC or Bally property but regardless it was pulled in favor of Chicago’s impressive push to upgrade an RSN they had to be able to do all pro sports as well as collegiate level.

I don't put any trust in any of the trade rumors as every single year, 95% of the rumors are false, on this site and on all of the NHL rumor sites. GMs are constantly talking, almost all players are for sale, and I highly doubt players put a lot of faith in the rumor sites, to the point where it hurts their relationships with their current teams. Anyone who is an "insider" who leaks information does not have the interests of the team at heart, and like politics, most rumors are intentional, but false. They are just posturing and nothing more.

I think the shift we’re seeing is players/agents tweeting out that they want to be traded. Terrible for trading team on return and probably not great for the room. But, yeah, I have had a few false flags of someone just wanting to feel important. It’s insane
