Just think. That's the BEST offer he had.

Laine no longer wants to play for CBJ due to locker room issues that he caused.

Maybe. Might be the best one he had that didn't involve retaining salary. Maybe ownership said they weren't willing to eat salary.

that was made quite clear... Wads didn't want to retain salary... good move on both sides.

Cbus - B+ didn't retain on a player that didn't want to be there...and got a nice young 3rd pair D man. solid work

Mtl - B - Got a head case player who has tons of talent and a 2nd rounder that could be 40 or under pick wise. Tons of risk though... Has PLD written all over it.

Hoping this trade is a bust for both teams

I don't see it. PLD had basically his entire contract length left, whereas Laine has 2 years left.

At worst the Habs pay him to ride the bus while they get a 2nd round pick and open up an organizational spot for a position of strength as far as prospects go.

After that, the trade is all upside.

the PLD comparison was only for mental state and running through teams... contract wise.. Habs are fine with the length.

This trade is a 100% win for the CBJ.

The team gets cap space, a young D-man with upside, and Laine is out of town. I wish he would have stayed, I thought he had to play his way out with a good season to get traded at the deadline, but Montreal solved all the CBJ's problems for them by taking the contract and the player.

Unbelievable.

... Now all the CBJ has to do is sign Sillinger and decide how to weaponize all that cap space.

P.S. My apologies Zak, you were right that Laine would get out of Columbus.

Laine being a malcontent for only two seasons on a rebuilding team is low risk to Montreal. No chance Montreal will be competing over these next two years and they can afford his cap hit even if he is worthless. Laine only has a 10 team NTC so they can probably move him for value if he plays well.

The way I look at it, MTL got what will probably be an early 2nd for a LHD (3rd round pick) that no longer figured in our plans because we have too many of those types of defensemen coming up. We might have lost Harris to waivers anyways.

If Laine works out then we will have gotten a top 6 player for basically free ... if not then who cares, the contract is only for 2 years.

One way or another, we are coming ahead in that deal because we are freeing up a roster spot for one of our upcoming defense prospects.

------------------------

For Columbus, they were not dealing from a position of strength so they did what they had to do ... they got a serviceable young D and most importantly they freed up some cap space. I think it's a deal that will work fine for both teams.
