Eklund: Will Jarvis Deal Lay Groundwork For Ohtani-Type Deferrments?
- Eklund

Do these deferments eventually count against the cap? It seems like cap circumvention to me. How much does the CBA allow for deferment?

I understand the concept that the 15.67 million is a static number and will be worth less in 9 years than it is now, I guess that is why most players don't want to do it.

This looks like a way to manipulate the salary cap in the same vein as salary cap in-season LTIR use, and then the salary cap disappears for the playoffs.
The AAV should not be adjusted to reflect the deferred amount. It should be the total amount over the actual contract playing term.

It isn't really creating much cap space. Half a million/year for Jarvis by doing this. Not a big deal unless you're getting every player to do this and almost no player should want this given receiving money backloaded is worse for the player.

No.

The amount of money you'd have to defer to make it significant cap-wise would be outrageous.

This is a tool to help teams save a little bit of cap space, not one that's going to be of any real benefit to the player.

You'll see teams do it here and there, but it's not something that's really going to entice free agents or anything.

When reading a blog like this, it would be nice if the blogger could point out the part of the CBA that it falls under, Instead of just saying it is part of the CBA.

Can’t imagine a player deferring money if there is no incentive financially for him to do so. What that incentive is I do not know.

They are not doing it out of the goodness of their heart.

If the NHLPA had any smarts, they would remember two words: Bobby Bonilla and fully embrace adding in deferred salary to their CBA and really benefit their membership during their later years when they are unable to work and have income to support themselves and their families...

Bonilla's deferred salary was from a one time buyout negotiation for his contract termination as the MLB didn't have a buyout standardized like the NHL does now. Just like what the Flyers and Johansen will be/are discussing. That's not going to be something a players union can negotiate as it is too specific to each individual case.

If a team is differing payments to a player, are they actually differing money so that it is there later? Where is the guarantee for the player?

Just get rid of the hard cap and be done with it. Put a luxury tax in place and let's see how good (or bad) a roster can actually get.
