So, assume Crosby has a new contract extension (3 years, whatever) put away in a drawer somewhere

If he plays through this season, Pens are out of the playoffs at the deadline. He gets traded for a 1st and a TOP prospect, then comes back as a Free Agent next season, kinda like Recchi used to

Is it worth it? Lose the legacy of his entire career in Pittsburgh, but the 1st and the prospect kickstart the rebuild and help his final 3 seasons with the team?

In theory, great, but I cant see it happening. How on earth does anyone turn down what Sid would be offered by the team receiving him? Once the air on the legacy balloon is out, why would Sid turn down more money to come back to the non-competitive rebuilding process the Penguins will be mired in?

That’s the risk. But assume the Pens are offering 10 million per and he’s traded at the TDL with 50% retained. The team receiving him might not be able to afford to keep him long term, just the 1 cup run

Pretty sure your math on seasons doesn’t work out there. Either way it’s a rubbish idea, and Sid wouldn’t do it. However I do believe he hasn’t signed an extension because he is seriously contemplating the end of his career.

I think there is no question that Crosby is waiting things out to see what the approach is going to be with the Pens. From Sid's perspective I am holding off on re-signing into the season for a few reasons:

1. Maybe he thinks that the Dubas is capable of pulling off a very strong rebuild on the fly where the Pens can be competitive. If so he may be willing to take a discounted contract.

2. If its clear the Pens intention is not to load up and compete, he should not be taking a discount and he should instead max out his contract. If Dubas won't do him right by trying to win while they still have him, they should do him right by paying him all of the money... $14M/year.

3. Knowing Crosby, he is going to have a really hard time fading into the final years of his career with no excitement. Winning might take precidence over all else, meaning he might want to play elsewhere.

Interesting article from Yost showing where Sid would be most impactful. The Canadiens really jump out and that was his childhood team. Add to that the rumor that last season the team and Letang discussed a possible trade to Montreal. It seems impossible, but would love to see a Crosby & Letang to Montreal trade. They do have the assets and would be the top choice for both players I would assume. I would much prefer seeing these guys chase a cup in MTL than miss the playoffs again for the last few years of their careers.

Would put money on him retiring at the end of this season over asking for a trade and / or playing for another team.

Some of the best radio I’ve ever heard was during the gen next or whatever it was years. Lange and bourque just slowly getting hammered. The third period was almost entirely toasted hockey stories if the game had gone completely sideways… which was frequently. Good old days.

I hope the new guy is good. I find myself listening to the radio here and there. Getzoff was good. Mears was just ok.

2 weeks until training camp opens....getting there...

I do think the potential is there for this team to be better than a lot of people are thinking they will be...probably wont be enough for playoffs but I still think they will be a challenge for a lot of other teams most nights.

I just think he loves the game so much, is still operating at such a high level, already missed a big chunk of time away from the game in his prime, his two best buddies are still there, he's within a few seasons of reaching/breaking records/milestones and there's Olympics coming in a few years he can be a part of that he's not considering retirement, yet.

I've been wrong before, though haha

I don’t think he’s retiring. It’s the half assed rebuild situation that probably has him considering where he wants to sign his next contract.

That could be possible....its also possible the not signing an extension yet could have just been a matter of him not being in town for a while haha. Should be back in the Burgh now or very soon, if not.

Definitely don’t need to be in person to sign a contract now days. They’ll likely either announce it soon or tell the media discussions have been tabled until after the season.

I'm just going by what happened with Draisaitl, really. Was away from Edmonton most all summer, with all sorts of doubts and rumours flying, and signed his extension like 4 days after returning to Edmonton to stay before start of camp and season.
