#14.

We're getting close.

Just 10 more to go before we get to the guys who might actually wear the jersey.

There's an English livestream from the Leafs site -

https://www.nhl.com/mapleleafs/livestream/

Cowan, Minten and Hildeby have been noticeably good. Lisowsky has some wheels. I've only watched a part of this period.

Weird that the Leafs even drafted prospects who can be bothered to play in the final 15 seconds of a period!

Not really a surprise when you consider where each team has been drafting respectively and the quantity of higher picks by each franchise - but when Cowan and Minten aren't on the ice, it's pretty one-sided one way and when they are, it's pretty one-sided the other way.

They might be getting told to back off tho, especially after the potential injury to Danford.

Rookie game 1 - 4-3 Leafs in SO.

It's a rookie game and the first one at that, so take everything with a grand grain of salt . . . but I did watch the last two periods. There's a lot of excellent players for both teams that will never see the ice for their big league clubs - you can see the difference in the talent level just on this limited ice surface of just rookies.

I will say that on Montreal you really saw Beck and Hutson stand out. Notably Thorpe is a really big kid on their side - and Mailloux is thick - like you see his size when he's in the mix with other kids. I thought Heineman looked pretty good, but for me Farrell didn't show as much as I thought he would.

On Toronto you saw some good chemistry with Minten and Cowan. Webber is a big boy and had some good moments. A lot of the defense prospects are just not that good at closing gaps or battling for the puck - that said there are only four guys there who are actual defense prospects - Webber, Niemela, Chadwick and Danford, who was injured. But Chadwick and Niemela were not overly impressive in their own end, I thought. I liked some things from Grebenkin and Lisowsky, but outside of the top line of Cowan-Minten-Grebenkin the Leaf team was pretty badly outplayed - especially when Webber wasn't on the ice, too.

The one thing I’m believing for the leafs is that they haven’t drafted high enough for awhile to see any prospects being ready young. Unless they’re top 10 I wouldn’t bank on them being ready for the NHL until their early 20s at best. I know there are a few who surpass that but not many. So I’m guessing a few of these guys will look notably better in 2-3 years.

Hell, even when it comes to Cowan it’s sounding like he’s going to have to play through the roof kind of good to make the team…. “Just competitive, dog-on-a-bone competitive. Really good player but he’s a young player too and you want to make sure you’re putting him in a position to succeed and not rushing the process.”. Sounds like Treliving isn’t convinced this kid will be making the team, and yes that is the correct outlook. The leafs are no longer rebuilding so teens making the roster shouldn’t happen often if at all.
