The on ice officials reviewed the hit and deemed it not to be a penalty. Looked like he hit the shoulder first.

EK would you trade Sam for Jarry with 50% retention? have the 2 teams discussed this?

Thought it was a penalty, seemed like he lined him up from 20 feet away.

Those are exactly the type of blindsided hits the NHL has been trying to take out of the game. Looked like the shoulder hit shoulder first but dangerously high.

It may have glanced the shoulder but it was full force to his face.

Blindside hits are no longer illegal in the NHL rulebook. It's hits to the head that are the issue. To me, it looked like the initial contact was on the shoulder but they're probably going to say he targeted the head.

Initial or principle contact doesn’t matter anymore. The language is “main” contact to the head. I believe this is main contact

Main contact was shoulder, after following through and after extending his arm he hit the head. He was out to hurt someone but I don't think he was out head hunting

Looked to me like be barely grazed his shoulder. Primary impact was the right side of his face IMO.

It's clear that his intent was to cause harm, which he did, whether or not he grazed his shoulder or didn't. The main impact was to RP's head and Syp extended his body upwards to insure maximum damage. The refs got this one wrong.

I was at the Leaf-Devils game last night…didn’t watch flyers game but just saw the hit. I agree, it may have glanced the shoulder but still a hit to the head from the side. Should have been 5 ….and should even get a game.

His head definitely took the brunt of the blow but initial contact was the shoulder.

How do you rule on intent to cause harm? It wasn't a premeditated situation where he was hunting the player down. It was a hockey play. Is there a situation with a hit where you're not trying to physically take the player out?

I wish they explained why the refs decided there was no penalty on the play.

Poehling was an absolute idiot for gliding into the middle of the ice with his head buried, but the brunt of the hit was directly to the head and that’s the rule right or wrong. Should have been a major.
