This most likely means Knies and Pacioretty are out longer term than expected OR that the Gourde trade is dead. Its fairly crowded on Left Wing, so it is a curious rumour.
Tanev is the right kind of player to fit the Berube system BUT the focus is on faceoff wins and controlling the play. Upgrades on Kampf, Minten and Dewar are out there They are going to cost a lot at the dead line.

One thing I've noticed is that Leafs rumours are almost always wrong. Sources said Nylander was getting traded 100 times. Then Marner. Morgan Rielly was on the way out. Guys like Chris Tanev, OEL, McCabe all join the team without any mention. But maybe this is where things change. The Tanev brothers would be a force together...

One thing to keep in mind...when Treliving was GM in Calgary he did trade Brett Ritchie for his brother Nick Ritchie. I wonder if he does that again???

What I have loved about Eklund since 2006-07 is that everything he writes usually has a deeper purpose... even the number of periods after things he says. Its not always the details that matter, its what we can infer by the rumour being out there. Like my earlier analysis, it could be a reaction to injury or the kraken and leafs being far apart on Gourde (as other teams are swooping in) so a new target is being established. It also just confirms the type of player the leafs are looking for as well. I don't predict the leafs being very active at the deadline, maybe 1 or 2 housekeeping moves.

As the Canucks fall further out of a playoff spot, Pius Suter is a versatile rental. Maybe Ek can make a couple of calls on him. Nyquist is another name to look at. He might gel with Crosby.

Tanev might be the best PK in the league, which 🇨🇦 could use, mostly offensive dmen on roster

They might do better if they sign Brandon Saad for the rest of the season a league minimum deal.

Worth noting that Treliving tried to unite the Tanev brothers in Calgary.
