Well, Florida is out of the running for Karlsson now. I don't know why Dallas is still being rumored by people as a fit but Nill has said outright in the media that they cant fit him and they also turned down the chance to get Jones. So unless Dubas is going to eat 50% to get a deal done, Dallas is out.
To me its down to Ottawa and Detroit. Both have a need for him, there is a path for it to happen cap wise (but not easy). I could see Karlsson being interested in both spots.
Carolina SHOULD be interested. The Leafs COULD be interested but they would need us to retain heavily. Those are the only possible fits in season, might open up a bit more in the offseason. |

When we tanked for Mario we demoted our best goalie and called up a scrub, but now we only have scrubs, so it doesn't even matter who plays. |

At this point, I think Jarry gives them a better chance of winning than Blom or Ned. It's definitely the right move. No reason to let a possible future tender play behind this team. Looks like his confidence has taken a hit since he first debuted.

Tank continues either way, but this is what's best for the younger goalie that might have a future.
Feels like we will likely be in the 4-6 spot in standings. From my understanding, there is a consensus #1, but he's not really that far from 2-4, and #5 is a two way center that seems close to them. After that a bit more of a crap shoot. I think I'm OK with anywhere in the top 5. Doesn't feel like the year to obsess with the top spot or trade up if you're there. |

I feel like a Karlsson trade can get done. Pens will be willing to retain on one deal. I think that's why they added the vets from Vancouver to protect their ability to do so.
I get why it will be easier in the summer, especially with the roster bonus, so I see why people think it won't happen until then. They still might not make one, but I'd hardly say it's a guarantee they don't.
I'm hoping they pull off something big with Karlsson, Bunting, or Rackell. Maybe all that goes is Gryz and Beau, but that feels like a missed opportunity if all they do is rentals 2 years in a row. |

This is Yahoo Fantasy's write up on him today:
"Jarry's last NHL appearance was Jan. 14 versus the Kraken, a game in which he gave up three goals on 17 shots in a fifth consecutive loss. In the minors, the 29-year-old netminder hasn't found significantly more success, going 6-5-1 with a 2.67 GAA and .908 save percentage. With youngster Joel Blomqvist struggling, the team decided to send him down to the minors while bringing Jarry back up in a corresponding move. The decision could also be an opportunity for Jarry to impress ahead of the March 7 trade deadline."
I highly doubt he's uping his trade value in next 4 days hahaha |

I didn't realize he was an overaged prospect. That makes his breakout a little less impressive though better than not having one. He's at least becoming someone to follow. Makes sense to get a deal done since he'll be joining WBS next year. |

Jesse Marshall seems pretty high on Porter Martone but said if the Pens got a shot at Misa or Hagans, he wouldn't be mad with those either.

Lol... I knew he wasn't very good, but from my untrained eyes, Blom and Ned look shell shocked. I doubt Jarry can be worse. Let's hope he doesn't stand on his head for the next month. I'd still let Ned take a bunch of games.....he's sieve. |

Insider talk
Grz, Beau, and Acciari are rumored to be the most talked/asked about and most likely to be traded at the deadline. Rakell is a back and forth discussion on if they should keep him (there hasn't been a lot of calls on him). Karlsson has some interest and there is a belief that if anyone pulls off a hail Mary and lands him at the deadline it could be Vegas with another team retaining cap space. |

Thanks for this. Can anyone add cliff notes from Josh Yohes article? |

You guys believing any team is going to take EK off your hands without 50% retained is comical. If this was his final season yes but with 2 more yrs left forget it. He will be a Penquin again next year |

Funny enough almost similar. He says that it's a sellers market so we may shop other players. He also discusses the possibility of Jarry and Graves potentially being shopped, but that would be Christmas in March for us.
He reports Karlsson probably won't be traded until the offseason. We will probably make trades on Wednesday or Thursday because Friday we are playing in Vegas later in the day and it would be harder to call up players across the country. |

Its not near as comical as how sh!tty the Rangers, who won the Presidents Trophy just last season, are this season...and for as sh!tty as the Pens are, there's only 6 standings points separating them hahaha...yes, I know, 3 games in hand. |

Um...you really don't understand the world of the NHL. Karlsson would dominate in most systems. Just not ours. Plus Jones was just traded with minimal retention and he has been similar defensively. He also has 5 more years left on his contract.

That's the thing... People think EK is junk. He's not. On the right team he'd be great. This is one of the worst situations for him. The Pens were already a "loose" team. It was a sketchy fit from the start. If you put him on a real contender who needs some juice from their D, he'd kill it.

Hagens is the best playmaker in the draft. He probably gets to the NHL quickly. I think everyone is sleeping on him because he hasnt blown the lid of the NCAA, but I think with Schaefers injury, there is still a chance he goes #1... especially if Buffalo lucks into that pick.
Misa plays an NHL game and has some really solid skill.
Martone has the most upside but I think he is a bit timid and could end up a bust.
Denoyers, Frondell, McQueen or Eklund could also end up special. Have to think that someone is going to reach on a D in the top 10. Right now its all forwards except for Schaeffer but Mrtka or Smith could easily go earlier.
This could be a good year for trading around early in the draft as it is not super clear cut and teams could really like specific players. |

Checking if I understand NHL salary retention rules.
After this season ends, EK is owed $16.5M over 2 seasons; however, $5M of that is a signing bonus next year. So if the Pens (plus SJ paying its retained part) pay that on July 1, then EK is only owed $11.5M from that point to the end of his contract with $1.5M being paid by SJ (leaving $10M).
If a 3rd team were to be involved in a trade at that point and retain the max 50% remaining, they would pay $5M total over 2 seasons but their retained cap hit would be $5M each year, hence $10M total.
Is this correct?
If so, this should be the kind of deal that cap-floor teams would love to make because they save $5M in real money. |

Not for 10M $$$...no one is taking on that salary for 2 more yrs. Retain 50% and you may find a taker |

Rangers have been an absolute nightmare this year and hopefully miss playoffs and land in 13 slot. |
