While I'm disappointed in the Wings, this wasn't going to be their year, no matter what. Last year wasn't going to be their year, even if they had squeaked in. It's easy to say Yzerman has made bad choices on FA signing, and he has, but out of all his trades & FA signings, only one was brought in to be part of the core of the future of the team, and that's DeBrincat. Copp, Compher, Tarasenko, Holl, Petry, their goalies, even Kane...none of them were brought in to be part of the core of this rebuild. They are all temporary placeholders. Seven of them are falling off next year, and five the year after. Some of them may be replaced or signed to another year or two, but they are all temps. Some will be replaced by the kids who are ready next year. Some of them will be replaced by the kids who will be ready the year after.
It's easy to get frustrated and impatient, I know I am, but the team we are watching today is not the team Yzerman is building for the future. Most teams hope that each draft produces at least two NHL caliber players. Detroit produced three in 2019, one so far in 2020 which will likely be two. 2021 has produced one so far, but likely four. 2022 has produced one and likely three or four. The odds are at least three from the 2023 draft and maybe a 4th in Kiiskinen and maybe a 5th if Finnie continues to develop. It's too soon to tell for 2024, but MBN is playing fantastic right now (2 goals last night).
That's 10 to 12 incoming players to replace the 12 outgoing UFAs. Some of them will be Wings, some will be traded for assets, but no matter what, the Wings are two to three years out from being a legit playoff team. If those players don't work out, then we can call the rebuild a failure, but it's way too early to call it a failure today. |
