I sense frustration in that blog. You are, of course, spot on once again and I hope the masses read and understand your points. |

Enough half-baked philosophizing, what is your plan for the D (obviously not know all the ins and outs of the assets needed to obtain said players).
I said yestereday and stand by it:
1. J Shultz (cap low and cost no assets)
2. Weber (if the price is reasonable- yes it would be very step)
3. Wideman (right handed for Goodness Sakes and costs no assets!)
I would say Wideman seems like the most likely. Any thoughts on how much he will get in UFA market? |

Bill you said it's important for teams to balance each role for defensman to have a good group of defenders. I can see why Carle is critized here, and to me it is because he really doesn't excel at any role, and is only above average in his passing. This team is missing its scoring from the point, and if Carle isn't going to be the physical shut down defenseman, then people feel like he should be more of a scoring threat.
I like to think of Carle like a Jack of all trades, but a Master of none. To me he should be on the second pairing, not the top pairing. He is definately a valuable d-man, and is very valuable in the right role. I would compair him to a poor man's Timonen. |

ugh Wideman sucks
He ALWAYS gets caught out of position or misses the net when he shoots. When the other team comes through the neutral zone with speed, he always backpedals to try to keep the rush to the outside. He NEVER clears the puck to safety each and every time, always screens his goalie or accidentally deflects the puck into his own net when trying to block shots. |

Incredible blog. Flyers fans need to be educated again since their first and only teacher, Gene Hart, passed away. Today's broadcasts don't allow for teaching, let alone play-by-play. More or less anecdote or opinion followed by more of the same.
As to the Flyers fans' assessment of defensemen, it follows this sort of pattern...
Flyers score a goal: WOOOOOOOOOO! Awesome job, (Goal Scorer) [and (Assist-maker that set up that play) and (Person that made the hit that freed up the puck)]!
There is usually no mention of what happened on the defensive side of the puck because of the euphoria of a Flyers goal.
Flyers' opponents score a goal: I cannot believe (Current Whippingboy) failed to check/poke/scare/hit/repel with halitosis (the Goal Scorer).
There is usually no mention of what happened on the offensive side of the puck because of the self-loathing due to an opponent's goal.

Loved the Blog like always. The only voice of hockey and reason that I trust.
Based on the excellent "other blue line is always bluer theory" (OBLIAB), I realize that I really do personally lack the ability to evaluate potential good D man trades. I esentially, rely on peoples opinion I respect namely Bill and also the likes of MJL, Jasq and Crimsoninja to weigh out options. For now, I am hoping for the best at July 1 approaches. |
