The NFL is all about manipulating the salary cap. It's about time it came to the NHL. Since the league won't raise the cap fast enough teams need to find ways to pay their stars and still stay competitive to make other moves. I am all for it

The key is finding people smart enough to help put together these contracts. A lot of dumb people lead teams in the NHL

I am all for taking advantage now while we can. It’s not against the rules obviously. I’d imagine this will be a topic of conversation during next negotiations. If we have an owner willing to pay, give them a ton of money that doesn’t count towards the cap.

The only issue that you have to have players okay with taking a deferred payment, as a dollar today won't be worth a dollar tomorrow. Especially if you're talking tens of millions, that's a long time to wait for money that you could be investing immediately. It's not like any NHL player will be starving, but it does make a big difference.

Curious why this is only starting to happen now. Did teams not know about it or were they all waiting for one team to break the ice?

If all teams can do it, not really any controversy around using it.

Before removing this loophole, how about addressing salaries for players in non income tax states. This only benefits a handful of teams, still unsure how that is ok in a cap world.

Is it really a loophole though? It's written into the CBA and the player has a say in whether or not they sign a deferred comp deal. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a lot of younger guys that are willing to push off a large portion of their salary for multiple years, but it's definitely going to happen.

My next comment hinges largely on my potentially-flawed understanding of the portion of the CBA that Jan posted but it appears as if the player can earn interest on that deferred comp, which might make it beneficial to anyone willing/able to wait on their payday.

They arent going to address the income tax disparity. It only pertains to half of the games since the income tax is paid to every State the game is played in. It would then carry over to Canadian teams also which I think have a higher tax rate.

And agree, it probably does have more to do with players being less willing to defer payments. If I were them I’d want more $ upfront too.

It's an interesting option for sure. If I had to take a guess, deferred comp could be something that gets utilized more often by higher-end players who can source income from other avenues (endorsements, etc...) in the interim and still make out on the back-end.

I'm also honestly not sure I'm understanding the interest-portion of what I said correctly either. But if a player can earn a significant amount of interest on deferred comp it could be an attractive option for guys who can supplement some of the money they deferred with endorsement/advertising income.

With mcdavid, draisaitl, nurse, and Bouchard, they will have about 50M tied up in four players.

Salaries are exponential in growth. The salary cap era has jumps each time the cap pops.

In 1994, Messier was making 3.6 Million per year.

Now, 35 players make 10mil or more a year. Not cap hit, but actual salary.

In 2014, only 8 players were above 10mil
