First of all, Draisaitl is a better/more complete center than Matthews, so he should be paid more. Secondly, it makes it more likely McDavid stays in Edmonton imo.

He's a best playmaker than Matthews for sure. Matthews is better defensively and as a goal scorer.

Draisaitl is a better goal scorer (by a large margin) when it matters most - against the best teams in the playoffs

Matthews can sign another contract in 3 years and he isn't taking less than Draisaitl after he sees what Mcdavid and Makar get.

Ah FFS. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Mathews' defence game. He is well above average when compared to other elite goal scorers in the game.

They're both unbelievable players, but for me, Draisaitl is the better center. They're different types of centers, but in the overall picture, Draisaitl just plays the position better when you consider everything. But again, you're comparing two future HHOF'ers here.

Draisaitl's playoff numbers are absolutely NHL elite, historically.

This is not complicated.

Leon: Hey Connor. I'm not signing any extension until I know your plans. Are you in or are you out?

Connor: I'm in. Our window is open. We came so close to winning. We have guys taking discounts to get in on this train. The fans are incredible. The facility is new. The ownership treats us great. If you stay, I'll stay.

Leon: I agree. I could probably play hardball and squeeze out a few more million somewhere else. But let's do this.

Connor: OK. But when I get asked about my contract extension I'll do the same thing you did. Say stuff about it has to work for both sides. I leave that to my agent. Blah blah. But I already told Katz that I'm committed. I told Bouchard too. He's in.

Not complicated. Sigh.

The 24/25 thing is off by a year, Drai is still 8.5 this year and Bouch is 3.9

Yawn. Nurse is an awful contract.

Maybe Hyman can score another 50 goals for just $5.5M. Seems like a good deal.

RNH is on the books for just over $5M.

Ekholm at $6M is good value.

Skinner may not be a top 10 goalie, but he's a legit #1 for just $2.6M.

Arvidsson, Skinner, Henrique signed for $10M total. Pretty nice.

Like every team, there are a couple bad deals offset by some really good ones. Pay attention if you can.

McDavid will 100% stay, will 100% make more than that, and the Oilers will be 100% boned once they realize they're paying two players a third of their cap space.

(Other than him being an Oiler, which is disqualifying,) I swear I want to like the guy. But he needs to play like the superstar he is instead of going full on goon-mindset Marchand mode the instant the Oilers are losing by a goal.

$ 15M - Connor McDavid (8 years)
$ 14M - Leon Draisaitl (7 years)
$ 9.5M - Evan Bouchard (7 years)
$ 9.25M - Darnell Nurse (4 years)
$ 5.5M - Zack Hyman (2 years)
$ 5.125M - Ryan Nugent Hopkins (3 years)
$ 2.6M Jack Campbell buyout
= 61M

Assuming $ 94M cap ceiling, leaves Oilers with $ 33M for 8 forwards, 4 D-men, both goalie and anything else they want to have above the basic minimum
